• The Quest For Ricochet

Like many of you, I started playing Dice Masters because I loved comic books. We all have a favorite character or two. Some of mine are Spider-Man, Nova, Nightwing, Dr. Doom, Electro, Riddler, and many more I canít take the time to name. Itís always a good feeling when one of your favorite characters is in Dice Masters, and the card is really good. Nova, The Human Rocket and Spider-Man, The Amazing are some examples. Iím a bit disappointed with different versions of the Riddler and Electro, but Iím still nowhere near the level of disappointment @Dave feels over Booster Gold. Sorry, Dave. Whatís worse still is when your favorite character is nowhere to be found in Dice Masters for one reason or another. People will inevitably bring up Invisible Woman, and it is a shame that she is nowhere on the horizon. But I want to bring up a character thatís near and dear to my heart. He was my original avatar on the site for a very long time. He is still my avatar in our TRP private group chat. Within months of AvXís release I made a custom card of him to play with at home. Iíve commissioned sketches of him from artists at comic conventions. His name is Ricochet.

    Who the hell is Ricochet?

There was a short-lived comic book series called Slingers back in 1999. The Slingers consisted of Ricochet, Hornet, Prodigy, and Dusk. It lasted 12 issues. You can read a review I wrote of that series here. Ricochet, Johnny Gallo, is a mutant. He has heightened agility and a precognitive danger-sense similar to Spideyís spider-sense. The sleeves of his jacket are lined with gold discs that he throws with great accuracy that can bounce off of objects and hit the target. Some of these discs have the ability to detonate, causing a small explosion. Heís got a smart mouth and a life full of regrets. When Slingers ended, he faded in to obscurity, making occasional appearances here and there. Ricochet is still alive and kicking in the Marvel universe, but hasnít been seen in years. Heís not an A-lister, to say the least. Heís not even a B or C-lister. Heís firmly on the D-list. But thereís something endearing about the character. The punk attitude, the fun skillset, the ties to Spider-Man, the big letter ďRĒ on his costume (fact: ďRĒ is the best letter); all of these contribute to why Iím always on the lookout for Ricochet sightings.

This was the image on Ricochetís profile on Marvel.comís wiki for a while. I met the artist of this piece, Jamie Snell, at Wizard World Columbus a few years ago. I did my research before going, and checked out his other work. It turns out he does a lot of Godzilla, Star Wars, and Power Ranger pieces as well, so we shared a few different interests. I told him I wanted to purchase a print of the Ricochet piece that was on Marvel.com, a print of Godzilla against the Cleveland skyline that he had done for a previous comic con, and commission an original sketch of mid-90s era Godzilla. He said he would work on the sketch overnight, and stop by his printer in the morning to pick up a Ricochet print for me. Itís not a big seller, so he doesnít keep them on hand. I told him how I really enjoyed the character, and had commissioned Phil Hester a few years prior to do a Ricochet sketch for me. We both talked about Slingers and the Ricochet appearances since then. Jamie was a great guy, and I looked forward to picking up my art from him the next day. When I returned to pay and get my artwork, I was blown away. The Godzilla print was great. The original commissioned Godzilla sketch was very detailed. Itís my favorite Godzilla sketch Iíve had done. Then, he pulled out the Ricochet printÖ followed by the original sketch of that piece. He told me he hadnít met anyone else who would appreciate having the original as much as me. He named his price, and after I shot a look to my wife that said, ďIím spending money and if you try to stop me, weíre going to fightĒ, I agreed. He signed everything, I gave him money, we shook hands, and I walked away with my spoils of victory.

Iíve made it a point to try to hunt down every piece of Slingers merchandise. I have every comic book appearance any of the four Slingers has ever made, complete with variant covers of all appearances. They made a couple of Heroclix chase figures and some cards for the original set of the VS card game from Upper Deck. I have them. I have commissioned sketches of all characters from some pretty big names, as well as more locally based talents. To my knowledge, all Iím missing are a couple of Marvel trading cards. However, since their time in the spotlight has come and gone, it looks like we will never see them in Dice Masters.

    Enter: WizKids Nationals

If you look at the prize structure for Nationals, youíll notice that first place gets to choose a character to be in a future Dice Masters set.

I could do it. I could put Ricochet in to a set of Dice Masters.

All I have to do is win a National Championship.

    See you guys in Canada.

Yea! When I daydream that I win Canadian Nationals and select Ricochet, I also dream the designers will be like, "since we are putting Ricochet in the game, we might as well put the other Slingers in as well, and be sure to give them all the Spider-Friends affiliation."... that's my dream.

Phenomenal see you there! I thought that prize was only for worlds

If I magically win it , I'll pick Ricochet for you , I already have my bad Flashes, the new OP one and a Flash and Arrow set incoming .

I'm on the other end of the spectrum myself, I had no idea who Miri Riam and Guy Gardner were until I got Bolt Ringed/Guy Rushed and wondered who they were for example. I've learned so much about super heroes and yet know so little still because of DM. I'm sure I'm not alone

Worlds is "design a card" and Nationals are "choose a character". Can't wait to meet everyone from the site up there and put faces to usernames. And if anyone else wants to jump on the "choose Ricochet" bandwagon, there's plenty of room! I cannot describe how awesome it would be if someone else chose him because of my article. It's now officially a movement. #ChooseRicochet

I'm an old D list fan from way back, and would love to see Steve Ditko's The Creeper in DM. They might get around to The Question, but it won't be the Ditko version. Fun article.

Could the Worlds winner please finally make a Flash that has the keyword "FAST"...? Ridiculous it doesn't already exist.

If I won Nationals, I'd make a case for Hellboy in the hopes of a Dark Horse set.

Man, the more I see people talking about going to Origins, the more I wish I were going.

I don't think I could pick a single one of the Slingers over another; I would need to have all four or nothing. But then, I would have the same problem if I won, since I want the Runaways in this game more than anything else.

I feel ya. There are reasons to choose each of them. Hornet is the most heroic, and the only member of the team who is currently dead. He deserves to be honored. Prodigy has been the most active member since disbanding, participating in Civil War, Secret War, and Fear Itself storylines. Dusk might have the most unique abilities to translate to DM with her "bleenk"ing. And Ricochet, I feel, is more the everyman on the team.

Runaways seemed good... but I'll be honest. I've never given it a read. I've heard great things. Maybe it's time.

Ricochet actually shows up in Runaways, in volume 2 I believe (at least in the editions that I have). As a member of a group called Excelsior, along with Turbo, Chamber, Darkhawk, Julie Power and Phil Urich. They get hired to find the Runaways, and it's a whole thing. I would highly recommend it.
