• Civil War: The Art of Intimidation

Once again, happy release day everyone! Now that Civil War is here and I finished up my series of videos on the starter characters, I wanted to take a second to dive a little deeper into what is sure to be my favorite new mechanic from the set: Intimidate.

We saw a similar ability in World's Finest with the uncommon, Mr. Freeze: Sub Zero that sent a character out of play till the end of turn. It was a "cool" thematic ability that “froze” the character for a turn. Now we have a named mechanic that essentially “freezes” the character with either fear or awe. As of writing this, I'm aware of five characters with an Intimidate effect: Falcon, Scalet Spider, She-Hulk, Punisher, and Thor. Both Falcon, Scarlet Spider, and common Punisher come in easy to buy 4 cost versions for your early Intimidation needs, and interestingly all the Intimidate characters have the same fielding costs of 1, 1, and 2.

The great thing about intimidate is it not only gives you a one turn reprieve from any die that may be causing your team's strategy some difficulty, it also removes a blocker from the field. This makes it a fantastic tool for those playing more aggro teams and need to counter the more control centered strategies and their "sit and be active" type cards. Zombie Magneto is keeping your Miri Riam from working? Field Falcon first, and intimidate him off the field. Need to hit some globals, but Jinzo's tax is making it too costly? Field Scarlet Spider and intimidate him off the field. Your win condition locked down by Dwarf Wizard? Let Thor show him the true power of bolt energy!

One of the most interesting characters that I'm most eager to try out in a team doesn't actually have Intimidate himself. Instead, The Punisher: War Journal gives intimidate to every character that enters the field after him. Under normal circumstances you likely aren't fielding more than one or two characters after Punisher, but my mind unsurprisingly quickly goes to what made Johnny Storm such a vital part of my World's team: Swarm. With Swarm, fielding as many as four characters a turn is not at all unusual. That many characters coming in after Punisher could easily clear your opponent's board or just leave a few blockers left, and allow you to easily get those characters, including Punisher cycling through your bag for another wave of intimidation a turn or two later. It's the sort of thing that make me envision The Punisher standing behind his van passing out machine guns to a legion of Kobolds, and Goblins.

On the other side of the coin, we also have a nice counter for Intimidate and Punisher: War Journal with She-Hulk: Ain't Easy Being Green. By removing intimidate from all opposing characters (other than She-Hulk) and preventing characters from gaining Intimidate she keeps your characters on the field in an Intimidation war and completely stops Punisher's weapon distribution party. She-Hulk would keep her Intimidate ability and be able to remove the She-Hulk preventing characters from getting Intimidate, so interestingly she acts as a counter and a counter to the counter at the same time.

Intimidate isn't a massive game-changer ability, but it's going to be a hell of a tool for aggressive play styles. it's an incredibly useful ability that comes attached to some solid characters and is just the sort of thing that sounds really fun to build around. It's one of the many reasons I personally can't wait to get pack cracking and get building.

I think there's a lot of potential with War Journal. In fact, an important question relating to it: Would Squirrel tokens count gain intimidate when fielded after Punisher? Could be very powerful if yes, depends on if the tokens count as character dice... Thinking about it, I'm leaning towards them not counting as dice (Which may have other implications with other cards), but hopeful I can have a scary unstoppable squirrel army!

So I am behind on reading all the info at thereservepool.com due to some family issues. Now that I read this you got me annoyed because you said, " As of writing this, I'm aware of six characters with an Intimidate effect: Falcon, Scalet Spider, She-Hulk, Punisher, and Thor." That is only five characters. Who is the sixth? Or does one of them have it on multiple cards? Sorry to be a bother but it is bugging me not knowing.

Sorry, think I counted Punisher twice by accident but still listed the characters properly. Corrected the mistake in the article.

I had already thought about the Punisher Swarm and my only question was should it be called "Punishwarm" or "Puniswarm". As a side note, 4 of the characters with Swarm are Fist Energy: Goblin, Orc, Stirge, and Kobold. And even by itself, Swarm seems to be a good counter to the new She Hulk (or a great bounce into purchasing her). Great article as always.

They count as characters, but they aren't "fielded" by Squirrel Girl, they are "placed in the Field". So no triggering Punisher or Johnny Storm.

Punisher's Intimidate looks more broken than Swords and Relentless Globals.

He's a 5 cost so he's VERY unlikely to have any impact in early game like turn 3, you have to field more characters AFTER him, and he can be stopped by anything that stops a When Fielded ability or prevents him from being fielded. You can also neuter him by trying to keep him in your opponent's field. Also, as stated in the article, She-Hulk stops him too. He's strong, but not even remotely broken.
