• Team Brew Switcharoo 13: Unlucky Numbers

Hello again everyone! Today, I'd like to try an experiment. I'd like to take ten random cards and, using a series of swaps so sweet they'll sweep salty sorrows sideways, create a team that could hold its own against the Bard Blitz AND Lantern Ring teams in a 2-on-1 match up! Ok, maybe it'll just be able to consistently LOSE any game against just one of those, but at least we'll have fun discovering some combos and maybe find a new place for one of these cards. We will also be choosing a Meta Rule, by the way, to guide our swaps. So, without further ado, let's get started!

First, using the wildly wild and awesomely awesome dm.retrobox.eu Team Building website, we will select our random starting point. This week, to celebrate the recent release of the new set, we are going to go an extra step and do a "Civil War" edition and only use cards from the Marvel U! So, let's see what we have:

Wow. I'm stunned. The universe has given me a good, random, and beautiful random draw. I'm almost afraid to go on... but, let's see what the random Meta Rule will be.

To select the Meta Rule, I've decided to go ahead and do something crazy. I went to the website wheeldecide.com. I took my list of Meta Rules, and bravely entered each one onto the wheel. Then, defying all odds, I clicked the wheel causing it to spin. It went around and around. I had my speakers on, so the tinking sound as the wheel spun on the screen was loud (yet delightful). And this... this is what happened:

So, no Super Rares on the team. We currently do not have any, but now we can't add them. But I don't think we NEED to worry about them. Let's take a closer look at our random picks and see how we made out.

There is a TON of good stuff here. Angel - Air Transport is fantastic, because it'll give us some bodies in the field. Couple that with the White Tiger Global, and we can have a steady Sidekick supply. Iron Fist - Immortal is pretty great at that cost, even with that Total Fielding Cost of 3. Beast - Mutate #666 is another solid card that has been a workhorse in many teams.

On the other side of things, there isn't really anything AWFUL here... just less useful. Iron Man is ok, but this isn't likely his best version. Moondragon would be alright if we had more Avengers, but as it stands she isn't really setting the world on fire. The same goes for Mister Sinister and Toad. The Basic Actions are also a little... less than ideal. But, overall, we have strong bones here.

First, let's look at a win condition. Having now drafted Civil War approximately two and a half million times (thanks WKO!), I know of a strong card that will pair very very well with White Tiger and Angel. There is a toss-up between the Uncommon and Super Rare versions but, thanks to our Meta Rule, the choice has been made for us. My first swap will be Moondragon for Venom - Symbiotic Organism.

This feller has two different abilities, and both are great. First: "While Venom is active, opposing Sidekick character dice cost 1 more energy to field." That's pretty great. The second one, and probably even more betterer, is: "While Venom is active, when you field a Sidekick, deal 1 damage to target opponent." Using both Angel and the White Tiger Global, we can field Sidekicks almost at will. Our opponent, on the other hand, will not have that luxury. Even when we use the White Tiger Global, they will have to either pay 1 energy (assuming they even saved one), or just not get a Sidekick. This will thin our bag and deal damage. So "Uncle Venom" is by far the best choice.

Since Sidekicks are now our "thing", let's up the ante a little bit. Our next swap will be Mister Sinister for Mary Jane - MJ.

I know that I have recently used this card, but here is the thing: SHE IS GREAT. Not only does MJ give one of our non-villain characters Overcrush, she also counts as a Sidekick. Field her, deal one damage to an opponent, then send someone over with Overcrush. Can't miss, right? Right.

My next swap is almost as easy. We'll go back to the Civil War set once again, and swap out Toad for Justice - New Warrior.

Here we have a superstar of draft play and, now, he's stepping into constructed. Justice is, for all intents and purposes, either a 4, 5, or 6 attack character when we send him over. Since we will be super heavy on Sidekicks, Justice becomes a must include. Let's put some Overcrush on him with MJ, and watch him go.

Finally, we are down to our last swap. I'm not in love with either of our Basic Actions. Since we are going to be working with a slower team, let's try to get some ramp. Let's swap out Infiltrate for Nasty Plot.

This, and Gearing Up, are two cards I've never been that fond of. All things considered, though, I'd rather take a turn early on to buy this guy and ramp down the road. I chose Nasty Plot over Gearing Up since it does provided that extra roll in case you need it. But, if we really want the feeling of drawing and rolling right away, we still have Spidey's Last Stand. If we can keep our bag light, then we don't mind Sacrificing someone to get him back into the rotation.

So, there it is. Let's scatter some dice around and see how this all plays out:

    x3 x3 x4 x3
    x3 x1 x1 x2

I think that went pretty well. Sure, if we hadn't restricted ourselves to Marvel only, it could have been even crazier. This, though, I'll take. Here's the plan: first, we want to start getting either Beast or MJ or Justice purchased. We can even buy an Iron Fist if our opponent is using something that would otherwise ping at us that IF can stop. We do, though, want to buy a Venom at the first chance we get. Once we have Venom in the field, we begin using the White Tiger Global every turn. We also try to purchase Angel, and get him circulating through. We are going to win with a combination of chip damage from fielding Sidekicks, and Overcrushing Justice.

I love our team. I think we are a Big Entrance, better ramp, and one or two defensive pieces away from a real contender here. What is more important is this: what do you think? Did I swap out a game winner when I ditched Toad? Could we have taken this team in an even betterer direction by focusing on a different win condition? If a tree falls in the forest, and no one is around to hear it, what is the capital of Alaska? Did we over-saturate this team with cheap characters? Please comment below and let me know what we can do to make this team even better!

These building experiments/exercises/time-wasters are a lot of fun, and serve a great purpose. Like many people, I recently competed in a WizKids Open event. While I did pretty well in the draft portion, I failed miserably in two places: the constructed main event, and the swimsuit competition. While I can't do anything about my beach bod (except work out and, you know, c'mon!), I can start working out my building muscles even more. Sure, it won't be easy to roll into a constructed event with the next all-new all-fresh Meta Breaker... but we can try.

Speaking of WKOs, let me take this opportunity to give the ever-popular "shout outs". I know everyone is going to think that their store and their event was the best one, but I happen to know that Owensboro, KY was the place to be for Dice Masters on May 14th and 15th. The thing that everyone always say is that our community is the best... and everyone is right to say that. I wanted to say thank you to all my new friends (DDK, the Cincy Crew of Andy, Adam, and Sean, Josh, Brad, Dennis... so many). By the way, it may seem like I was just saying random names there. And, If I were, you would never know it. Unless(!) you are one of those awesome people, or one of the other AWESOME PEEPS who I met and who were awesome and who flowed the awesome through themselves for awesome times, that make this game great. If you are one of the people from the Owensboro WKO (mentioned or not), thank you for making my first major event so great.

Enough hyper and sappy stuff... until next time: keep creating combos, brewing boffo bands of battlers, and throwing things at the wall to see what sticks!

I like this team. Death by pinging is always entertaining.... As long as you are not on the receiving end. I personally would have gone with Superhero Registration Act over Nasty Plot, as I am greedy and love the potential for that third die.

Oh, I thought about it. My only problem with it is that it gives your opponent a chance to KO a die. With so many good When Fielded effects floating around, I don't like giving someone the chance to cycle a character back through. That third die is nice though...

In the games I have played with it, most people were saving Sidekicks for SRA fodder which would play into your strategy here in the Venom game. Yes, you give them a little ramp but the trade off is not bad. However, I did get myself Nitro'ed with SRA because I was not paying attention... So there are those kind of shenanigans to watch out for.

I think this is a great team (and I agree with you that you got a great random draw, all things considered). This Fearsome Foursome of Angel, Venom, Justice, and White Tiger is just evil, especially adding Mary Jane too. I wouldn't be surprised to see this core team used a lot.
