• Team Brew Switcharoo 14: 41 oorahctiwS werB maeT

Hello again everyone! Today I would like to try an experiment. We are going to take ten random cards (eight characters and non-basic actions, and two basic actions) and, using a series of four swaps, attempt to take from "What's That?!?" to "What's Hot!!!" Or, at least, shuffle four cards for four different cards and have a slightly more playable team. We will also be following a randomly selected "Meta Rule". So, put on your chef's hats (or any hat)... it's time for "Team Brew Switcharoo!"

The very first thing we need to do is to select a random starting point. Using the ever popular and always clickable dm.retrobox,eu, we can do just that:

Now, for the Meta Rule. Have you ever noticed that, sometimes, a small business seems to appear out of nowhere? I mean, literally "no where". It happened to me today. I was walking around my neighborhood and, on this previously vacant lot, there was a little shop. On the outside it appeared to be a rustic home that had been built in the early 1900s... but I know I had not seen it before. I walked in to check the place out (and see if they had any Dice Masters booster packs because, you know, why not?), and the proprietor greeted me. He was very tall and gaunt, and I thought to myself "I wonder what sort of object that I desire I will end up with?". I began to ask questions, but Mr. Tall-And-Skinny seemed to grow ever more annoyed with me.

"You want to use me for that shtick at the beginning of your articles. I know it. It is stupid and tired. Just only swap in Common cards... and get out of my store!"

So, uh... I left. And apparently only Common cards can be swapped in. FINE.

Let's take a look at what we have. First thing I notice is that we have ALL THE BOLTS. The next thing I notice is that we have Melinda May and a S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent. Sure, it's not the Agent I would most want to have, but this will work. Black Widow - Stinger is always a popular and powerful card. Even Hawkeye can be used here.

On the other side of the fence, we have a few things that really are non-starters. Half-Dragon with no Dragons. Darkseid is too specific to be useful. Zombie Gladiator (Zladiator?) only works if we are full of characters... which we are not.

Ok, so I think a clear path to build around has presented itself to us. The first thing we probably want to do is give "The Calvary" some back-up. Now that Civil War has been released, we have several options for S.H.I.E.L.D. characters. I already know that I want to go big with the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division... so let's go rapid fire here.

Gladiator for Phil Coulson - Inspirational Leader
Half-Dragon for Taskmaster - Photographic Reflexes
Spectre for Maria Hill - Deputy Director

Melinda May has a great Teamwatch ability. If we can get Taskmaster into the field after we have May, then suddenly we have doubled the damage every time we field a S.H.I.E.L.D. affiliated character. Throw in Maria Hill's Sidekick blocking and Coulson's Sidekick and Agent pumping, suddenly we are getting lots of bang for our buck.

After that flurry of card flinging, we are left with only one swap. I think, with all of these co-workers on one team, I'd like to try one of the newer Basic Actions. Let's swap Feedback for Suffering and Satisfaction.

We know that we'll have plenty of affiliated characters in the field, and some of them are not going to be attacking. Why not take two attack from Melinda May, for example, and throw it onto one of the Agents? The Agents that will be buffed by Coulson, and maybe another Agent. That could work out pretty well.

So, let's scatter some dice around and... yup... that looks good...

    x3 x3 x3 x3
    x2 x2 : x2 x2

Here is the plan with this team: buy a few smaller characters at first to protect yourself and start building toward the bigger ones. Melinda May should be your first "larger" purchase, followed by Taskmaster once she is out and fielded. Once they are out, start fielding the S.H.I.E.L.D. affiliated characters like mad. Turn 5? SHIELD! Turn 6? SHIELD! Turn 112? SHIELD!

So, what do you think? Did I swap away the game winner in that multi-swap deal? Should I have steered this team in another direction? Was it silly to get rid of a reasonably decent Super Rare to prop up a "flavor-of-the-month" WKO prize? Let me know in the comments below!

Also, if you haven't already, please check out my podcast debut from last Thursday! @Shadowmeld; and @isaacbv; were nice enough to let me play in their sandbox, and I had a blast. I'm hopeful that I can do it again soon.

But, we do have one more piece of TBS business this week... and that is for me to say: Until next time, keep creating combos, brewing boffo bands of battlers, and throwing things at the wall to see what sticks!

I personally would have kept Zombie Gladiator and swapped out Darkseid instead. Darkseid helps you not at all unless your opponent happens to have Justice League characters (not a common occurrence) while Zladiator has slightly better stats and gets a boost from Taskmaster. But still a very solid team!

I'm going to be honest here, and say that the main reason that I kept Darkseid was to have diceal symmetry. The feng shui of the team depended on the top row having 3 dice, and the bottom row holding 2. If I added Zladiator, then he could only have 1. That would have created either a fifth 3 die card, or one that had 4. I COULD NOT HAVE THAT.

Fun build as always. Excellent article and podcast this week.

I would like to see some Limited theme brews. I have been playing Age of ultron and Civil War in a combined pool to draft some teams with a buddy of mine and it has been a blast!

Justice League and world's finest is our next stop.

I like this build, and I always like seeing what can be done with common cards. I do have a question: because of the wording "while active" if your Taskmaster is taken out but the Black Widow remains, or if both are taken out the same turn, does that double up on the Aftershock? (It is a keyword ability.) My gut says "Yes", but I wondered if there was a ruling.

No rulings on Taskmaster yet. I'd say if they were both eliminated simultaneously, you'd get double the benefit, if Taskmaster was taken out but Widow remained you'd get the effect, but if Widow was taken out first then Taskmaster would lose it at that time.

OK, if other people are on the same page (which you are), I'm going to read it that way until someone tells me otherwise. Thank you for your response.

If you don't have the Melinda May card what would you swap in for her?
