• Control Card Archetypes Part 4 - Dice Stat Manipulation

Welcome back! I've been underwater with work lately, so I haven't been able to keep up with my article series, but things are starting to settle down so I'm back at it! This week we'll be looking at cards that can manipulate die stats. Hopefully we are able to expose you to some new and useful cards!

    Transfer Power

This is my baby. I love this card. And I actually buy the action too! I know... I'm crazy ;-) The reason I buy the die sometime is because it is safer than Poly in the sense that your opponent can't use it against me as removal. Now, the global. Pay a . Swap the attack value of one of your characters with that of one opposing character. Awesome for so many reasons. This global is best paired with Human Paladin, an all mask Raven Team, or with something like a YGO Ring on Cassie or Lord of D. If paired with one of these studs, your opponent won't be able to use the global against you, so you won't need to stockpile each turn to make it work best for you. Remember, use this to buff up your unblocked attackers and to let your opponents big stuff smaller so that your little guys chump blocking survive or to let them through for minimal damage.

    Archnemesis

I've never bought this Action Die, but the global is sick. With the amount of sick control cards out there that have large butts, this global can allow you to remove them a lot easier through pings or through combat damage. If you pay a to make Oracle's D a 1 (lvl 1&2) or a 2 (lvl 3), that is a whole heck of a lot easier to get off the board than her 3-4-5 D. It's not a guarantee that you can KO it, but it makes it a lot easier. It gets even more fun when you're able to use both the Archnemesis and Transfer Power globals together! Oh, that big gigantic guy out there is causing your trouble? Well TP your SK attack onto it and then Archnemesis it and not it's a 1A-1D weenie! So much fun! I suggest running the FUS Beholder with this two BAC combo to get two free globals!

    Venom: Angelo Fortunato

Another one of my favorite cards! When he hits the field, he does some serious work! No more SK's, no more little annoying things, etc. I could stop at just his ability, but there is SOOO much more to Venom. When you pair him with the two above mentioned BAC, he can basically remove anything on the other side with two shields (usually only 1) if you can target your opponents dice. Think about the cards that are giving all of us a headache now a days; Dwiz, Oracle, Constantine, Bard, etc. Venom and 1 to Archnem takes out Dwiz and Oracle on all 3 sides and Bard and Const on 2 sides. Add in a TP and you can remove anything on the field as long as you have something with a 2 or lower attack. Pair Venom with OP Crow and your opponent is going to have A LOT of trouble every attacking you with anything other than a fist character. He is so ruthless!

    Mr. Mxyzptlk: Trickster

This isn't strictly stat lowering, but can function all the same. At the beginning of your turn, you're able to neuter a bruiser on your opponent’s side and make it a SK basically. This could allow you to get rid of it a lot easier though any number of ways. It can also allow you to make one of your SK's a copy of something amazing on the other side. So

    Doctor Doom: Reed Richards' Rival

So here's the think with Dr. Doom....... He is 1 less than Venom, but significantly less damaging. I say that because he has a higher fielding cost, lower attack, and effects your characters as well, which can really be detrimental. With all of that said, but you build around him and only have villains, he is a perfectly acceptable card to play!

    Emma Frost: Graceful

So I'll be honest.... I've never used, or seen this card used in any format, which is unfortunate. She's only a 4 cost and has really good stats! While she is super specific and only gives -1A/-1D to Fists, it could be a useful ability against swarmy teams. It would be fun to pair with Venom to see if it did any work. I think that it really hasn't gained any traction because fists typically tend to be big all around and a -1 won't really do much to hamper its ability. With that being said, it's a great card to keep in mind as future sets come out!

    Kryptonite: K-Metal

A double edged sword for sure, but again, if you plan around it, it could be the difference between winning a losing. It only costs 3's and lowers ALL characters Attack by 2. Also, don't forget that this ability will stack! So, if you land two of these, you should be able to Archnem just about anything to the Prep Area. It's quite specific, and isn't for everyone, but it could be a lot of fun to build around. Just make sure you don't put a Superman on your team ;-)

    ::
    Scarlet Witch: Avengers Disassembled

It's a lot to pay for, being a 6 but if you are going to face off against a lot of Avengers, or as we are now seeing the resurrection of Tsarina, Scarlet Witch could be amazing! If going against Tsarina, she can't even be fielded. If there was a global to give things the Avenges affiliation, she'd be a no brainer, but alas, there is not (probably a good thing there isn't or Patch would be everywhere!). She can help against a bit against Hulk, Cap, can definitely hurt a Faclon SK team, Wasp, Ronin, and all the other amazing Black Widows. So while there ins't as much utility here as there is with Venom, it can definitely catch people off guard, and it a fun change of pace.

    Namorita: Taunting Villains

What a wonderful card to pair with our above mentioned globals! Either way, as a character or as energy, she can make a difference. And if you can pair her with Venom, you really shouldn't be worried about anything coming at you. Also, this is a "When Block's" ability, so you can trigger it multiple times!. I don't think she is the answer to our current Bard meta, but she can certainly help you survive the rush with the right complementary pieces!

Well, that's it for this week. As usual, I'd love to hear your thoughts, cards you like or are new to you, and cards that I forgot and missed! Thanks for your feedback!

Magneto Sonderkommando, from AVX is very nice too: All your Villain characters get + 2 A and + 2 D. And the global let you reroll a Villain die for a Mask.
      Expensive, but really nice.
I like pairing it with Dr Doom Reed Richards Rivals, in a full Villain team .

It's a bit niche, but I think Owl Bear - Lesser Beast has a place in the current meta as part of an anti-Bard combo. Placed alongside another debuffer like Doctor Doom or in tandem with a fielding damage dealer like Manticore or Penguin, you can completely block out any and all Bards or Dwarf Wizards that aren't level 3. It can also help cycle your own Elf Wizards if you're trying for an action heavy style of play, perhaps with Betrayal or Vicious Struggle.

Good Call, Necro. I had completely overlooked that one because of its exclusivity when I made my list a few months back for this.
