• Control Card Archetypes Ep. 6 - Fielding Tax

Welcome back! Today we continue with our 6th edition of our Control Card Archetype series. This edition will explore cards that tax your opponent field characters. Here we go!

    Fielding Tax

    Cerebro: Supercomputer

Mean, mean and mean. This card is vicious when it comes out early. It is best on characters that have a "when fielded" effect that they will want to trigger multiple times a game (Elf Thief anyone?!). It's also great on characters that are just low cost and you know that your opponent will buy multiple copies off. Even with multiple action hate cards now in the game, this is still an incredible card for its cost!

    Lyssa Drax - Future Sight

If paying a minimum of two energy wasn't enough, with Lyssa, you can make them pay two LIFE! Even better, its for ALL dice of that character, that turn. So if they are loading up on stuff with, say, Big Entrance, you know what's coming. Since the goal of most players is to never use their bag, it's become very easy to predict what is coming out of your opponents bag every turn. Another positive, they have to pay life, so you can get around any "takes damage" effects such as Hulk, Captain America, etc. She is a fantastic card that will chip away at your opponents life and before they know it, they'll be below 10 and ready for you to strike!

Venom - Spidery and Venom - Symbiotic Organism
These two are really great cards that just haven't their way into main play yet. They both make your opponent pay 1 to field a SK, with the Rare having the added bonus of dealing 1 damage to your opponent when you field a SK. With the amount of Ally characters growing with every set, and the advent of The Front Line Team, these two guys are severely punishing. I think that we can all agree that in most cases, energy taxing is actually better than life taxing, so these are perfect and can really disrupt just about any team build.

    Oracle - Hacker

Yes, there are other Oracle cards (and we'll be talking about another shortly)! Similar to Cerebro, Oracle increases the fielding cost, but this time only by 1, but to ALL characters other than SK's. This can be brutal. What a great tool against Elf Thief and other low cost teams (Lantern Ring anyone?!). She's a 4 so there are definitely other abilities that I would want in my 4 cost slot, but she shouldn't be overlooked. Again, life is a resource, and a relatively large one depending on where you are in the game, but energy is a pretty scarce one most turns.

    Scarecrow - Dr. Jonathan Crane

Maybe not a viable card in every day play because of its condition of only influencing lantern colors, this card is still a nice little gem. Green and Red are the most obvious choices here because of Guy Gardner, but there are plenty of yellow and pink lantern cards that could make it worth the chance.

Moon Knight - Avatar of Khonshu

So yes, its fringe, but there are so many great Avengers out there that it could be worth it. With the huge rise in popularity of Captain America: The First Avenger, this could be fun to play with. It reduces yours and makes them pay a little more to get theirs in play.

    Lex Luthor- Citizen of Metropolis

Bridging the gap between this weeks and next weeks archetypes, this is a really fun card! Being able to look across the board and pick the most punishing energy type for Lex is a real advantage. It works extremely well against mono energy ring teams, agro rush (usually lots of fists), and any other team that has a cheap "when fielded" ability that they are trying to cycle by KO'ing and re-fielding constantly.

Well, that's it for this week. Some are obviously stronger, but each can find a role on a team build, especially if you are playing in a legacy series, which I am now =) As usual, I'd love to hear your thoughts. what are you looking forward to playing? What did I miss? Am I completely out to lunch on any of my assessments? Let me know and lets spread the word!

    Thanks for your feedback!

Thanks for the article. I enjoyed reading it. I was putting together a team of characters that effect fielding cost. One good character is the Mind Flayer Greater Humanoid, a better version of Lex Luthor, it's a 6 cost which may be prohibitive but it increases the fielding cost of one energy type by 2.

I love cards that tax but can be prohibitively pricey energywise because these things really shine in packs, 1 is ok 2 or more can cripple. Anything 4 cost or over is likely going to come too late unless you have a board wipe and 3 cost is going to stall your moving forward. Thanks for making me rethink that venom though, I forgot about him and need to work an ally team with that 1 damage per field deal. Also Oracle is my girl, the one you quote is nice but the one that makes globals cost one more is just the meanest thing you can do turn 2.

Great article. I had overlooked all the fun possibilities of this version of Cerebro. These Venoms, I was already on board with. Play either with his best friend White Tiger, but especially Symbiotic Organism, and deny them the energy they wanted to use for a Global on your turn and do damage too. I would think that if you are playing with almost any version of Captain America on your team you want to consider using this Moon Knight. Thanks again for the reminders and new ideas.

the grate thing about Cerebro is that it has a 2 mask for every energy face (probably a missprint) so even if you don't roll an action face it can still help you ramp up, that and it immune to WL senstro

Not a misprint, a design decision (it was still early in the game, they were deciding if all action dice should have nothing but double energy - same in UXM, YGO, and BFF).

The BFF just has Generic Energy for all of the actions, not an energy specific one.

I'd strongly second that uncommon mind Flayer. It's truly an amazing card. If you can get to him quickly he shuts down a hell of a lot of teams.

So does the venom- symbiotic organism white tiger-mystical amulet combo fit into the can't overrides can aspect of the game? Saying that I have venom on the field and use mystical amulet global, my opponent can't field a sidekick without energy on the field?

Wait, I didn't think Cerebro worked on Elf Thief since it fields for free.

Cerebro cost can't be reduced. Can't beats can.

Free is considered reducing the cost so cerebro would trump elf thief.
