• The Transition Zone: Top Super Rares For Prime

With the new Prime format introduced to us by our friends over at the Pro Dice Circuit, we have entered into a new arena of competitive play. No longer does Unlimited no-holds-barred have to be our only option. We can now play in a sandbox that doesn't allow Bard, Guy Gardner, Hulk, Tsarina, Venom, Gobby, Parallax, Constantine, Beholder, Professor X, Viscous Struggle, Booster Gold, Elf Thief, Dwarf Wizard or fabricate to hamper our teams.

The details for this new format can be found on their website HERE but let me break down the CURRENT sets you can choose from:

    • World’s Finest
    • Civil War
    • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1
    • Green Arrow and The Flash
    • Dr. Strange Team Pack
    • Deadpool

With that framework in mind, there are some cards that are going to rise to the top and become Prime meta. There are some obvious choices and some dark horses. Today in The Transition Zone I want to explore specifically the high value cards in our game, the super rares. I will highlight the ones you really need to get your hands on before they go up in price and so that you can start testing out some ideas. So in no particular order, here are my top 10 “Ready For Primetime Players”!

    Batgirl-Babs

This card would have made my list even if we weren’t seeing the return of Magic Missile in the TMNT skin. Babs is a destructive card that comes in with a low TFC and as a 4 cost she is reachable early. She has been called ‘’baby Hulk’’ for a good reason-with 1 damage she can go in and start cutting apart your opponent’s board. There are other ways to get at her and give her damage also, but using a ping of any sort helps to clear that other side of the board. I fully expect this valuable card to continue to go up in value with the Prime format

    Multiple Man-Pile On!

Speaking of high-value cards, Multiple Man: Pile On! gives you some serious ramp and bang for your mask buck. This guy gets work done in the house, bringing 6 dice on his card to swarm with. 3 dice swarm isn’t that great. 4 is good and I can only imagine that 6 is lights-out crazy good. My son loves this card and has been using it quite a bit. This card has not lost value yet online for good reasons. I fully expect this guy to be the ramp of choice for many and a way to flood the field when you are ready to do so. He pairs so well with other mechanics we will discuss shortly and can get you to the high cost combos you need quickly even without PXG to drive the mask love.

    Ronin-Between Employers

Both the uncommon and super rare version of Ronin offer protection you are unlikely to see in most sets. They are able to completely shut down the damage of one source and redirect it to the die, KO’ing it and bringing it back (hopefully) the next turn. Ronin is going to be a great way to mitigate damage in Prime no matter the source. This may be the best defensive-minded card in the super rare set out there. His low TFC and 3 cost to purchase make him a great early buy designed to pay off throughout the game. Bring this card to be the outlet you need and one more thing for your opponent to contend with.

    X-23- Blades of Rage

Maybe you have seen the previews for Momentum, the new 1 cost BAC coming in the TMNT set meant to make your prep area a one-way ticket to your reserve pool? Well, what if we had a card that took advantage of those full prep areas? X-23 does just that, boosting up her inner rage with +2A for each energy face rolled from both prep areas. End of Days anyone? Add in some overcrushing power or unblockable flying cars and you have a weapon worthy of her character namesake.

    White Lantern Sinestro-Destiny Awaits

Oracle is a rough card to get around with ramp and PXG options and globals aplenty, and in the Prime format she still gets to play. I expect less global-heavy teams but with the likes of some of these reprinted BACs coming, I don’t think she will be completely gone. Now what if you could not only make it difficult for your opponent to pay for the globals they need but you could make it difficult for them to pay enough energy to do anything at all? Enter Sinestro. He robs your opponent of double face energy and knocks it down to single energy. In a format where PXG will not be allowing energy to flow like honey, anything that clamps down on energy and taxes your ability to spend will grind teams down to slow halt. Look for him to be present in the Prime mix as a great dance partner to Oracle.

    Katana-Bushi

3 cost mask with a TFC of 1 has been established so far as a good balance. Now what if we have a character that can instantly appear on the field? Katana does just that as long as only 1 energy is used as “?” type. This allows for an instant blocker if you need it going into a turn that may be your last if you didn’t have a body, or even better allows for a splash of a character to get the job done right at the end when you need it. Katana has some play in Prime and is one I will look to see get used paired with teams that need that one more punch quickly.

    Lady Deadpool

There are plenty of solid action dice in the Prime format available to you. Plan to use the any of the reskinned classics in the TMNT set? Running some Batfamily characters and plan to use Dark Avenger? How about The Front Line? There are also some great non-BAC like Cold Gun and Flying Car. Now imagine you could use two of them at once-if that sounds like it could speed up your team quickly and destructively, then you will love Lady Deadpool. She makes all action dice members of Team Rocket-double the trouble and that much more lethal. Pair her up with action love and watch the sparks fly.

    Zatanna: Inverted Incantations

Zatanna brings a super rare version to the Prime meta that will allow you to take advantage of the teams running big splash sidekick teams. She will reroll them all in the field and prep and force some damage across the board to your opponent. This card may be a little less impactful from the aggro side but don't sleep on her-I have seen her played very well to pull apart developing plans. She is a damaging control piece and one that is sure to find some play in the new format.

    Batcave: Large, Dark, Wet

So the comments about the basic action dice being good and now better with the recent announcement of reprints? What if you could find a way to pile them all together and use them right when you need them? That is what Batcave has to offer. You can stockpile some basic actions as you can get to them at the 1 cost discount and then take them out right when you need them to put them to work. Batcave doesn’t get the love it deserves in a fast meta that we now have in Unlimited, but what happens in the modified Prime? This and the right basic action dice can be a cascade of trouble from the cave that your opponent cannot content with.

    Venom: Abandoned the Stinger

When it comes to ‘’buy low, sell high’’ cards on here, Venom may be the dark horse. This super rare is the cheapest of the bunch, but will be a boon to sidekick teams looking to do some damage. Maybe you are swarming with Multiple Man like crazy and have masks to spare-how about applying those to the bodies of the man quality sidekicks in Prime. There are definitely sidekick shenanigans to be had, and Venom can be a way to keep them on the field or push them ahead for the victory. At a 5 cost you will need some ramp, but isn’t that what the Pile On is for? His TFC of 2 is solid also. He is my unsung hero that I can see doing some damage.

So that's my view-what do you think? Any others that you would put ahead of these 10?

Nice write up! I feel like with cards like Doctor Light and SR Zatanna sidekicks and Ally teams are going to be hurting and therefore SR Venom may not be as good as people are thinking. But I do agree that the likes of Kryptonite and Cold Gun can swing the game for the Ally teams into the right direction.

With no Falcon to make Allies unblockable, I don't see as much of a problem or reason to play some of those cards. Though, there are many strategies that are possible when you stop having to worry about certain cards.

Falcon Wingman from Civil War actually does allow for 1 sidekick to be unblockable when fielded. May not get them all through but a beefy foot ninja could be trouble

I would put Vampire Wolverine in the Top 10 over Bat-cave - yes, it's harder to get out, but once you do, it is really annoying!

Totally agree that is a good one-but I think Batcave is so undervalued that when it does make its way into the Prime meta people will see it in a new light
