• WKO3: Draft Moves Into Prime Time

Some news crept out today that I know that I have been waiting for a long time to hear - at least since my earliest experiences with the Rainbow Draft format.

The third round of WizKids Opens, the regional championships that allow one to qualify for Nationals, will be draft - or at least the one in Detroit will. You can see for yourself on the WIN page here.

While this is the only one we know about, I can't imagine that others won't follow suit.

Prize support is standard fare for the regional events, but what I am more excited about is the fact that WizKids is finally respecting the Rainbow Draft format. Long hailed by many as Dice Masters at its best, the draft had been relegated to Rainbow Draft Weekends. A nice event to be sure, but they’ve mostly been used to push old product and have no impact on the competitive season. All of that is changing with this announcement, and I hope it is a view of things to come. I would love to see Draft become meaningful even beyond this!

This does leave some questions - for example, what does "modified" mean in the play style? That will surely be answered before long. For now, though, I'm certainly excited.

Let’s put on our wild conjecture glasses for a second - let’s say rotation hits and for three rounds of WKO, we have a Standard Format, that is only the recent non-rotated sets, an Eternal Format, essentially Unlimited, and a Draft Format? There are many ways to play this game, and play it well, many ways to demonstrate one’s prowess as a master of dice.

And couldn’t a national or world tournament involve more than one of these formats? Draft qualifying for a top 16 cut, which is constructed? That’s not uncommon to competitive card games. I'm happy to see Dice Masters acknowledging that being good at the game is more than just being good at Constructed.

I hope this is a trend that continues into the future!

At long last, Rainbow Draft is ready for prime time! What do you think?

Hopefully modified means some kind of BAC limitations. No one likes drafting whatever and just playing Heroic Defense and Magic Missile to win.....

I could only guess, but I suppose we'll see.

Maybe the "modified" refers to the structure of the tournament? Maybe there'll be a redraft for top 8? Maybe it'll govern how big draft pods are or how Swiss works? Hard to know.

My hope is that they stick with 6 man pods if they plan to do 12 packs. 6 man pods gives each player 2 shots at each pack, unlike more awkward 4 and 8 players. 4 man pods would have a huge advantage!

Presumably they have to have some sort of contingency for odd numbers or instances where things don't split evenly. What if you have, say, 17 people at a more out-of-the-way site? 4-4-4-5? 6-6-5? 8-9? No perfect answer there (though 8-9 seems less likely).

I'm a little confused. Is Eternal Games an official rep store of WizKids or is there more info out there around this that people have access to? The event listing says unlimited constructed and uses the standardized format of the WKO posting and then it's in the store's specific Additional Info section where they say it's a modified draft. My reading of this entry is that WizKids isn't changing anything and the store is simply deciding to do their event as a draft which is their prerogative but not anything sanctioned by WizKids. If anything it sounds like the store wants it to be more fair and they're going against the WKO rules to do so.

It has been verified that WKO3 is draft for every store running a WKO. The template just wasn't changed by WK's before Eternal created the event. They may have jumped the gun a bit on that.

Do we know yet whether a win at this event will count as a qualification for a Nationals Unlimited spot? Or are we thinking they might add a Draft Championship to this year's slate?

No indication that there is a draft component at Nats/Worlds. The full schedule has already been announced. But who knows....... ;-)

It does. modified is just to indicate that people will Draft in pods and then play their chosen team against the full tournament pool, not just their pod.
