      that was my highest pinnacle of Magic-and even then I was still only at best a casual kitchen table player

      I don't remember if you mentioned last week during the BACs, but Vigilante Justice can be a great removal tool as well. It probably didn't make your list because it doesn't remove on it's own, but if you KO any of your characters, even a sidekick, it's great for removing problem pieces on the other side, especially if you're running Bat-family. And as far as that goes, Bruce Wayne is another option - it's only temporary removal in the form of capture until the end of turn, but in many of the teams that use him, you're clearing the board to swing with your Level 3 Bat-men, so it's all you need. He also works well with Static - when your opponent rolls on his turn, you can use Static to ping your own sidekick and capture one of their characters (like an Oracle or something) for their turn.
