• Special Edition: Vs System 2PCG Spoiler! Aegis and Krakkle-Thoom

So, many of you are probably confused right now. Youíre either a Dice Masters player wondering ďWhy is there a spoiler for a non-Dice Masters game on The Reserve Pool,Ē or youíre a Vs System player wondering ďWhy am I coming to some dice website to look at the latest Vs System spoiler?Ē Both are valid questions.

The short answer: Here at The Reserve Pool we play games other than Dice Masters. I know, shocker. Iíve personally been playing the new Vs System (VS2PCG) since its launch 2 years ago. Itís a fun game. Great mechanics. VERY different from Dice Masters. Initially it was my more casual superhero gaming outlet. In recent months, Iíve been getting more and more interested with it. Becoming much more of a lurker in the online community. I have also got a few other members on our team here to try the game out. Itís a bit of a hit with us.

That still doesnít answer why we are doing a spoiler reveal here at TRP. Well, Upper Deck will not be able to meet their originally planned deadline to have the upcoming Marvel set, Monsters Unleashed, available before Gen Con. It will be available AT Gen Con. But instead of having the new set not yet be legal for their events, they are spoiling every card in the set prior to Gen Con and making it tournament legal immediately. That way players can pick up their new Monsters Unleashed sets and already have a plan for what they may want to use in their cash tournament. A call was put out for websites (blogs, podcasts, etc) who would like to spoil cards from the new set. We are such a website. We have plans to expand TRP eventually to cover multiple games and this very well may be our first step.

So, to DM players: We will eventually have a subsection of The Reserve Pool for Vs System content. For now, itís just going to share space on the front page. Feel free to check it out. Marvel superheroes crossing over with other IPs (Aliens, Predators, and more to come) is one of the things that drew us all to Dice Masters in the first place.

To VS players: Feel free to look around and ask any questions about Dice Masters. Like I said, we will eventually have a different space here to catch all of our VS content as it grows. We will be approaching the game from more of a casual viewpoint complete with blogs, occasional spoilers, and a podcast (probably monthly).

Without any further introduction, I give youÖ THE SPOILERS!

    Aegis

Randy: During the Monsters Unleased comic event, Aegis is one of the six kaiju that Kuwai draws from his imagination to battle the Leviathan Mother. (Fun fact: Each of the monsters created by Kid Kaiju, with the exception of Fireclaw, was created by each of the pencilers who worked on Monsters Unleashed. Aegis was designed by Salvador Larroca, who penciled issue #4.) After the defeat of Fireclaw, the remaining five kaiju (Aegis, Slizzik, Hi-Vo, Scragg and Mekara) join together to form Smasher and ultimately defeat the Leviathan Mother.

NowÖ about this card. Heís a 4-drop, 5/5 with 1 health. No range, no flight. Heís a melee brawler, through and through. Flavor wise, Aegis is spot on with the Durable keyword. He gets knocked down, but he gets up again. Youíre never gonna keep him down. Durable helps make up for only having a single health. He cannot be knocked out purely by -1/-1 counters. And if your opponent does try to knock him out through combat, his Impenetrable Armor super power can give him the added DEF needed to survive. Having that super power available during any combat does give him some versatility, and can allow him to survive as an attacker if some Plot Twists mess up your plans.

Heís also 1 of the 5 named Monster characters on Kid Kaijuís level 2 MC card. If Aegis is discarded to level Kid Kaiju up, he gains Durable. A Main Character with Durable is huge. I donít know how popular Kid Kaiju will be to use as an MC, but Iím pretty confident that Aegis will be in 100% of those decks.

Aegis doesnít lock down your opponent making life hard on them. He doesnít really accelerate your own ability to win. Heís a decent body that has some staying power. I like him. I like the Durable keyword. I donít love him. But If Iím using the Kid Kaiju MC, Iíll definitely be playing him.

Dave: Thematically, I didn't get to read this event, so I had to do some research. His hefty armor in the comics is given a lot of respect in both abilities - it makes sense, after all, that a heavily armored character would be both "Durable" and have "Impenetrable Armor." I like that he can only be wounded through combat; it (obviously) makes him resistant to a great many things, such as -/- counters or abilities that simply stun a character. Plus, getting 5/5 as a four-drop makes him pretty attractive in that slot alone.

He's a solid beatstick that can arrive in a relatively early part of the game and is likely to do some work pretty quickly. His combat ability, Impenetrable Armor, also adds to his versatility, in that he can use that plus a Plot Twist (say, Krakkle-Thoom!, but also older cards like Savage Surprise) to suddenly become much larger and take care of a character that has accumulated a healthy amount of +1/+1 counters without getting stunned himself - Like Thor has been known to do!

    Krakkle-Thoom!

Randy: Thatís it. Wrap it up. Game over. We have officially spoiled the Plot Twist with the greatest name in the game.

I suppose we can actually take a look at what it does.

Itís a Monsters Plot Twist that can only be played during combat on your turn. Giving +5 Atk is a big swing in combat. I see it mostly as a late game piece to try and swing things in your favor due to the 5 Atk requirement.

Outside of the Monsters affiliation, I could see it used with MC Mystique. You could use the Trickster God Plot Twist on Mystique to make her a 6/1, giving her 5 XP. Then follow it up with Krakkle-Thoom while attacking, to give her another 5 XP, leveling her up. I know that build would take a couple different affiliations floating around, and it may not be the most viable. But it's there. If we see anything else from Monster SCs or Plot Twists that give Atk bonuses, it might be worth keeping an eye on Mystique with them.

Dave: Getting +5 in a pinch is nifty, so much the better if it comes as a combat trick! Besides the interaction noted above with Aegis, lots of characters could benefit - but most of them are going to cost 5 or more, making this more of a late-game card, or one that fits in to a deck that relies on giving characters a lot of +1/+1 counters.

In either case, given that most characters need some heft to use it in the first place, I think it's best used as either a gap closer in response to a plot twist played by your opponent to diminish your attack or bolster their defense, a way to close the game out against a high-defense Main Character, or, similar to the above point with Aegis, to get a lot of damage on to a character that is spiraling out of control with counters and must be dealt with.

Well, thatís what we think. But we are a little more on the casual side of the fence. What do the experts have to say? Will either of these cards find a place in the meta?

If only there was a place for Dice Master players to talk about other games they are interested in. Oh wait... http://www.thereservepool.com/forums/28-Board-Gaming

I respect and understand that you guys like other games than Dice Masters (heck, I was playing Vs system back when it was a collectible card game! Still have my old cards...). However, I'm not a fan of splitting the focus of TRP like this. Once the website has a clear dedicated section for Vs System, then great, I'll be fine with this. But until then, I'm afraid this will lead DM players away (and they won't come out and proclaim, "I'm going", but they'll just drift away slowly, due to laziness or inconvenience), and possibly lead people to use other DM-focused outlets (specialized pages on Reddit, Facebook...) to discuss the game. Just my opinion though.

I picked up the base game about a month ago, and have had a blast with it since. Different than DM, sure, but the pvp is there in a big way. Thanks for the sweet spoilers! This set looks to add a lot of great new mechanics, and keywords. Hmmm, how can I add that PT to my deck to make Adam Warlock even more unstoppable?
I, for one, enjoy the variety on the front page. Thanks again!

Don't expect the front page to be inundated with this. It was a time sensitive opportunity that we had and it couldn't wait for our back-end to be in place.

Also recall that we have on many occasions, in podcasts and articles, talked about other games that we enjoy and some specifically with crossover appeal. No different.

Please - don't start posting Star Wars Destiny content...

BTW - Play Vs System also, fun game with enough similarity to DM for crossover, but different enough to feel you're not playing a "re-skinning" of DM.

Tried Destiny, wasn't for me. No worries there. Eventually this will be compartmentalized but it is important to me that my team continues to exist beyond any one individual game (as much as we love that game).

#Randy please stop posting about other games! My wallet can't take it man! Last year on a podcast you mentioned Hearthstone so I decided to go check it out since I hadn't heard of it before...Now, just over a year later I'm playing every day and trying to reach Legendary rank. Seriously man, I'm going to have stop clicking on your articles and listening to a podcast once I see that you've had a hand in creating it I'm going to erase this article from my mind and pretend I've never heard of VS...hmm I wonder what it's like...

Haha. @GNGJ I'll see what I can do. Funny you mention Hearthstone. I played it pretty solid for about a month and it just trailed off for me. But if you want a REALLY good mobile game, I suggest Fire Emblem: Heroes. It launched early this year. I got in day 1 and have logged in and played literally every single day since then.

@Randy Fire Emblem: Heroes looks like the old school RPGs I used to play hours upon hours! Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy were my gateways into RPGs. Looks like Stamina points can limit gameplay unless you buy orbs...hmmm...Oh well, at least 75 orbs is less than a feed

@GNGJ Stamina is not too restrictive. It is a very free-to-play friendly game. I've probably spent around $60 on it, and that was more of "I love this game, I want to give some support" rather than "I need ORBS!". There's no REAL pvp. The closest thing is the Arena, where the AI controls other peoples' teams. So you might face some other awesome teams, but you won't be in the same tier as people who spend thousands of dollars unless you climb the ranks and start beating them. As far as Stamina goes, Stamina potions are one of the items you can get for completing daily/weekly/monthly quests. They instantly give you max Stamina. most days I just play with whatever Stamina I have, and it replenishes at 1 point every 5 minutes. Days I want to grind and level up, I might use 3 or 4 Stamina potions. I'm currently sitting on 60+ Stamina potions. The thing I enjoy is that I can honestly just play for however long I want. If I have 15 minutes to play because I'm sitting at the top of the steps waiting for kids to go to sleep, I can. If there's a special event and I need to win X amount of battles in this 2-week period to get some cool new Skill Seal, I can play for a couple hours.

I'm not encouraging any addictive games.

      But seriously. It's fun.
