• Greatest Stories Ever Rolled: Marvel Team Pack Wish List

We’re taking a break from the norm to do something different. Instead of making a Dice Masters team based on existing characters that focus on a specific series or storyline, we are making a wish list. In response to the Maximum Carnage Team Pack next month, I wanted to look through Marvel and DC history and choose my own hypothetical Team Packs. I’ll list all 8 characters/actions that would be included, AND a sample card from the hypothetical set. Then, at the end, you guys tell me which one you would be most excited for.

I picked the three Marvel storylines or series that I think would not only be interesting as a comic fan to see, but might offer something new to the game. If you missed my DC article, you can find it here.

    Tomb of Dracula
I’ve always been a big fan of classic monster mythology. Marvel has a long history of using these classic characters like Dracula and Frankenstein’s monster. Simply put, I’d want to see many of these characters, and those who battle them regularly, finally appear in Dice Masters.
    - Blade – We have a version of him from ASM, but I don’t feel like that version really portrays the extent of his abilities. I want the true Daywalker. The character that kickstarted the modern superhero movie craze.
    - Dracula – I’m confident there’s not a character in the entire Marvel universe as evil – truly evil – as Dracula. He’s battled Blade, of course, but has also had great fights with the Hulk, X-Men, and even Apocalypse. He could have some really awesome abilities with Energy Drain, stealing enemy characters to your side, or maybe something more combat focused. So much potential!
    - Morbius – Why not? We got the zombie version as a SR from ASM, but we still don’t have a classic Morbius. He could have been in the Maximum Carnage team pack, but we missed him there too. It’s time to right this wrong. Bring Morbius to Dice Masters.
    - Werewolf By Night – Jacob Russel belongs to an ancient lineage of Lycanthropes. He’s heroic by nature, but when he transforms he becomes more of an anti-hero. Through a series of events he no longer needs a full moon to transform, but that is when he is at his most powerful. He’s teamed up with many heroes from Doctor Strange, to Spider-Man, to Iron Man.
    - Hannibal King – A supernatural detective. He was once a vampire, but has since been cured of the hunger associated with it. He’s an excellent marksman and continually fights against evil forces.
    - Deacon Frost – A scientist searching for immortality, injected with vampire blood. He’s responsible for killing Blade’s mother and for infecting Hannibal King with vampirism in the first place. He’s battle both Blade and King numerous times. You probably remember him from the first Blade movie.
    - Man-Thing - He is a large, slow-moving, empathic, humanoid swamp monster living in the Florida Everglades. It is able to sense human emotions, and is enraged by fear. Regardless of what level of humanity the creature still possesses, it can discern when a person's motivations are evil, which causes it pain and motivates it to lash out.
    - Frank - An intelligent clone of Frankenstein's Monster nicknamed "Frank" was a member of the Paranormal Containment Unit of S.H.I.E.L.D. Unlike Frankenstein's Monster and his other clones, Frank has a mace for a right hand where it can be launched out on a chain similar to a flail. There is a large cannon where the radius of his left arm is supposed to be where it houses different fire arms like machine gun barrels and one detachable handheld gun.

    Spider-Man: …There Comes A Costume
For years, our favorite webslinger has been changing his costume on us. Sometimes they were just subtle changes, but other times he didn’t even look like the same Spider-Man. We’ve gotten different suits for Captain America, different armors for Iron Man, we even have different color Hulks. It’s time for Spider-Man to gain that variability in Dice Masters too.
    - Peter Parker – We have a few other hero’s civilian identities as Dice Masters characters, why not Peter? The biggest thing about this is that he needs text that says “While active, character cards named Spider-Man gain Suit Up – Peter Parker.” And every other character card in this team pack is named “Spider-Man”, but references a different costume Peter has worn over the years.
    - Spider-Man (Symbiote) – Ah, the black symbiote. I’m honestly a little surprised we haven’t seen this one in Dice Masters yet. It’s a must-have.
    - Spider-Man (Future Foundation) – While Johnny Storm was not with the Fantastic Four (temporarily renamed the Future Foundation) Spider-Man joined the team with a white costume to match the rest of the team. This is the least likely, given the current status of things.
    - Spider-Man (Big Time) - Peter developed this stealth suit during the Big Time storyline to battle multiple Hobgoblins. Available with blue, green, or orange highlights!
    - Spider-Man (Ends of the Earth) – A special armor Peter developed, customized to be able to handle each member of the Sinister Six. I think this one would need some sort of bonus specifically against Villains.
    - Spider-Man (Superior) – When Otto Octavious’s mind was controlling Peter’s body, he took on a more brash persona, claiming to be superior to Peter’s Spider-Man in every way. This might have a Flip ability giving it the Villain affiliation on the other side.
    - Spider-Man (Captain Universe) – Spider-Man imbued with Captain Marvel’s cosmic power. The power came to him when he needed to defeat the mighty Tri-Sentinel. The most powerful Spider-Man has ever been.
    - Spider-Man (Spider-Phoenix) – Ok, so this one never REALLY happened. It was all a part of an illusion created by Nightmare when Spidey teamed up with the mutant group Excalibur. Still, it’s such a jaw-dropping moment.

    Generation X / New Mutants / Young X-Men
Growing up is hard. Throw getting super powers and battling larger than life villains in to the mix and you’ve got the ingredients for just about every young mutant comic ever made. There have been so many great teen X-Men stories over the years, and so many different titles that have featured these kids over the years. It’s hard to narrow it down to just one series or story, so I’d like to see a bit of an all-star team for young mutant characters that have been a part of some X-Team.
    - Jubilee – Everyone’s favorite gamer girl from the 90s. She’s gone through some drastic character changes in recent years, including becoming a vampire. I’d love to just have classic Jubilee from the animated series or her Generation X days.
    - Cannonball – He started out with the New Mutants, and eventually graduated to join X-Force, the main X-Men team, and even the Avengers. His flight ability could really be fun in Dice Masters, where it could thematically give his character Fast, Overcrush, or other unique abilities.
    - Young Cyclops – The original 5 X-Men were brought forward in time to the present day. Of those 5, I think Cyclops had the most unique story. He was devastated at seeing the extremist version of his modern self. After reconnecting with his father, Corsair, the two of them took a galactic road trip to bond as father and son. I’d love to have a space pirate version of young Cyclops.
    - Hope Summers – How HASN’T Hope been in Dice Masters yet?! She was a pivotal character of the Avengers vs X-Men storyline that the first OP set drew directly from. There’s been multiple X-Team books that she’s been in; even the central character in the Generation Hope series. I love the father/daughter relationship she has with Cable. Everything from her first appearance in Messiah Complex to her recent adventures in X-Force. Hope has been a very important character to the X-Men universe.
    - Tempus – This is probably the first character on the list that many of you are unfamiliar with. Unless you were reading Brian Bendis’s Uncanny X-Men run years ago, you wouldn’t even know she exists. She has powers to manipulate time in a variety of ways. She can create bubbles where time stops. She trapped the Avengers in one such bubble to help the X-Men escape at one point. She also traveled forward in time and joined up with the X-Men of 2099. Her story is heart breaking, and well worth investigating. She disappeared from comics around the time of the Secret Wars incursion events.
    - Goldballs – A new recruit alongside Tempus in that same run of Uncanny X-Men, Goldballs endeared himself to many. With a body type that doesn’t scream “superhero” and a seemingly laughable power to expel bouncing golden orbs from his body, he didn’t seem like a character that would stick around very long, but he truly has a heart of gold. Pun fully intended.
    - Rockslide - Despite his earlier appearances as a stereotypical bully, he has evolved into a good-natured (though extremely boastful) and fiercely protective friend to most of the school's students. He’s never been one to shy away from any task, no matter how threatening.
    - Pixie - With fairy-like wings, hallucinogenic dust, and the ability to teleport herself and others over long distances, Pixie has become a vital member of the X-Men. She eventually graduated, becoming a full member of the team. She’s awesome.

Out of the 3 I’ve listed here, which one would you guys choose? Comment below with what Marvel Team Packs you’d like to see. Or, flesh out one of the characters I named above with a cost, ability, stats, etc, using the retrobox card maker. A lot of times we discuss the competitive meta, or we try to come up with comborific teams for casual play. This time, get creative. Use your imagination. Post your thoughts and opinions below!

My "Team Pack" wish list is that they would use/support existing teams in the Starter Sets, so there could actually be some thematic overlay rather than having to pair "The Defenders" with "Superman/Wonder Woman"

I'm still holding out for an Age of Apocalypse set, so I will go with Onslaught Saga.

12 cost Onslaught. (1 die/max 1) : Opponent must sacrifice 2 characters to block this die.

5 cost Magneto. :May redirect the first damage you take this turn to one of your opponents characters.
Once per turn, may sacrifice Magneto to reduce the the purchase cost of Onslaught by 5.

      5 cost Prof. X .: While active,Whenever a die is sacrificed, prep a die.
Once per turn, you may sacrifice Prof. X to reduce the purchase of Onslaught by 5.

3 cost Phil Ulrich-green goblin - Once per turn you may purchase Action dice with "Goblin" in the title for 2 less. They gain boomerang while Phil is active.

5 cost Sentinel: Characters damaged by this character gain 1 stun token. Opponent may sacrifice a character to prevent this.

2 cost Franklin Richards : When Franklin Richards is Ko'd, you may move a die from your out of play area to your prep area.

4 cost Nate Grey - Xman : At the beginning
of your turn, add 1 counter to this card. Each counter adds +1A and +1D to each Nate grey die. Remove these tokens if Nate Grey goes to the used pile.

      3 cost Invisible woman: Infiltrate

Alt. to Invisible woman for licensing issues

2 Cost action Enter the Astral plane : Continuous Send this die to the used pile to switch the character text of one character with another until end of turn.

      Bonus
2 cost Goblin pumpkin bombs (1 die/max 2): Target character must pay (1 generic) to block until end of turn. ( I would only include 2 versions of Phil and this would take his 3rd spot.)

Franklin Richards would be an off limits licensing issue also, part of Fantastic Four unless the kid of Invisible Woman and Reed Richards is considered somewhere else.

Onslaught should just be 12 cost, you win if active at end of your opponents turn.

      @JustK

I just couldn't leave out Franklin for story purposes, plus I wanted to introduce the grab from out of play mechanic.

Onslaught would make a good case for the auto win scenario. I would stat him where that almost be the case anyway. Sacrificing 2 characters every turn would get you to the win within a couple turns 99% of the time.

Also theme wise, various Marvel heroes sacrificed themselves to defeat him, so I went that route.

It has to be the Tomb of Dracula set. Just like a subtle horror connection.
