• D&D: Tomb of Annihilation at GrandCon

GrandCon was this weekend in Michigan, and while none of the TRP staff was able to attend, we did have "friend of the site" Chris Walker able to attend and take a few pictures. Check out what he saw, that Tom Vasel brought with him...

And a covered up foil card with a Red Stripe and a Max Dice of 1......

Some thoughts: we've only seen two packs opened. From these, we have one pack with 6C/4U/2R (with a foil C/U/R), and one pack with 7C/3U/1R/1SR (with foil C/U/SR). This seems to fall pretty closely in line with the same distribution as the gravity feed packs, as mathed out here by user @ccm00007. With this, we have around 28 of the characters/actions spoiled (out of 40) and 5 of the 12 non-promo BACs.

The Super Rare is "Ring of Winter" and is apparently a storyline artifact for a character known as Artus Cimber. There are rumors that Artus brought the Ring of Winter to Chult and it may be a part of the ToA story line. That may unfold as the ToA story line does, but for sure, the author/creative director behind Organized Campaign DnD stuff is the author behind the Ring of Winter story line AND the Tomb of Annihilation story lines.

Also, Zombie T-Rex! I published a campaign adventure once with a "spirit" T-Rex, this guy is gonna be a favorite of mine, for sure!

Thanks for sharing. Nice to have a sense of the distribution we can expect.

The Bolt Swarmer immediately caught my eye. What was the purchase cost on Chwinga?

Wow, thank you very much for sharing this! I've been waiting months to see that kind of info.

First thing I notice: Love the packaging. That sealed bag for the dice should help protect the cards quite a bit, and honestly, seeing the dice like that just looks awesome. I expect we'll see a lot less bent cards in this set.

Also, glad to see my math wasn't too far off! My fear was that they'd only put 1 rare per pack save for exceptions (like in Heroclix boosters), but with 2 R in one, and 1R, 1SR in the other, sounds like they're smartly avoiding that mistake. Didn't expect there to be variability in the number of uncommons, but thinking about it, not especially surprised.

I'm quite encouraged by what I see. While I'm looking forward to this set, it makes me wonder what I should do about future ones where we get feeds and draft packs...my son loves opening a feed with me, but draft packs are, in some regards, more efficient, and give BACs. Hmm...That may not be easy.

Is that Super Rare Max 1? Looks like it to me, but with the other card on top of it, maybe I just can't make out the acute angle part of the '4'.

I'd been wondering how WizKids was going to handle Max 1 Super Rares in draft packs - I'm skeptical they will actually include 2 of such dice with the cards. (If you look carefully at the product announcement here, there is a line about 'collation is not guaranteed').

It looks to me like the dice from the pack with the Super Rare are always obscured by cards in the above photos, so no hints that way. Guess I have to keep wondering.

At the fan appreciation event, they mentioned keeping with Max die 1, but giving 2 dice. This allows folks to play 2 dice in draft, but only 1 in constructed.

This at least means you should be able to get 2 Rares in every draft since you get one from your pack and one from the passed pack. I am curious to know if it will be 1 SR per box or 2. Believe there are 9 draft packs per box so is that 2 of them have a SR because usually 18 Rares per GF (this includes SR).

Actually, a display includes 8 draft packs, not 9 (with an MSRP of $80 instead of $90). When I calculated how many SRs we'd get, that made it a bit of a headache. If you click the link in the article and see what I calculated, since they said the cost to collect is the same, my estimate is 1 SR per 5 draft packs, for just around 1.6 SRs per display.

Mind you, I must reiterate, as I said when I did these calculations, that this is just speculation. However, it's speculation that seems to be supported by the data we're getting now.

The Uncommon is 2B and spins itself up when an NPC is fielded. You can see the purchase cost in a stack on another picture.

The Common I can't see the purchase cost, but it must Attack on levels 2-3. Because of this detriment, very similar to the Kobold who must attack if there's an Adventurer, I would strongly suspect the purchase cost to be 1B (!).

It looks like Max 1 to me as well. Assuming it's the Ring of Winter, this would be logical.

As Shadowmeld said, they were very explicit at the Fan Event when we asked that although the card is Max: 1 for Constructed play, the Draft Packs would come with 2 dice and allow both (in draft only). In the last picture you can see the sparkly Die and it looks like there's 2.

"Collation not guaranteed" is their legal-speak that has always been true. Just like with boosters how every once in a blue moon you'll get dice that don't match the cards in the pack. It's extremely rare but they don't want to "guarantee" that the dice and cards will match 100% (even though they will 99.9% of the time).

Ha. Makes me think back to an old event (Pre UK Nat's 2016) where I was holding back a Mask each turn to use Distraction on my own Kobold because my opponent had a Humsn Paladin in the field.

That seemed to be price I was willing to pay in those days, now, in these days of Oracle, not so sure.
