• Nationals! Updating at intervals.

7:33 - Heading back to the hotel to eat, relax, and get video/audio ready. Recording the podcast tonight. Reviewing DC tonight. Who knows what else?

7:29 - Qualified! My draft team was just bad and boring. They're doing drafts as single elimination so I forefeit and left. I tried something villain oriented and just didn't have the offense. He built a wall of bolts. Bolts will be big in DC, at least in draft.

6:09 - 3-1, should qualify. Sweet! I'm just happy to be in day two. And I'm about to draft DC!

6:01 - Just beat Flying Sidekick against a great guy named Dane. Overcame an awful start that really could have done me in!

5:35 - Lost a close one that would have been different if Patch ever came up character. FUN and brain-burny game though.

4:41 - Won again, great game against a great opponent. Rich was a super nice guy. Excited for the third round.

4:10 - About to be on camera again.

3:55 - Won my first against a crazy team. I was nervous - it involved Kobolds, Wish, and Phoenix Force cards. It's viable. He played well.

3:31 - Kudos to G&S getting back on track. We're about to pair for the next qualifier. Big difference from the problems this morning, which seem to just be due to slowness of registration.

2:54 - adjusted for the next event and excited!

2:03 - Went first, got my rolls, won. Very nice team by my opponent though.

1:30 - Finally won! Played a nice guy named Brian. He had a very different team, it was great playing against him. It was a longer game, MANY more interesting decisions to make than in games I've played here already.

12:53 - Beat Randy! Had poor rolls to start. I stabilized and got the Jinzo. Unfortunately it might be the only one I win all day with my luck! Still having fun though.

12:35 - Randy and I are about to play on stream!!!! Link in comments.

12:29 - Heard in the venue - "When the game is 'who can swing for lethal first, it's really boring.'" Meeting AWESOME people though - so mission accomplished in that way.

12:22 - Lost pretty quick. Dylan has a pretty cool team, knows his stuff. Nova/Widow.

12:12 - Met a few TRP users and also am playing Dylan, of Vasel mods now. I'm going second.

12:07 - DC will be available for drafting. Twitch feed for the event is in the comments. Round two pairings starting but not everyone is seated yet.

11:58 - Everything is behind schedule. The event was to start at 10; it's nearly noon and round one scores are still being reported and Matchups haven't been determined. No way the second qualifier starts at 3:00.

11:50 - Found someone who went first and didn't win. Lots of Novas, Bombs, and Patches. PXG is everywhere. Not that this is surprising.

11:38 - Talked to four more people. Winners went first, losers went second.

11:33 - Aaaand, I lost. So did Randy. Evan won. In these games, the winners all went first. The losers went second. Played against a nice guy using Patch/Widow.

11:06 - Matchups starting. Looks like Randy will be on camera!

11:03 - Quote from some table talk before the round by someone else - "They errata'd a card that was only broken because of some other global." Referring to Spider-Man and PXG.

10:41 - We're in and have filled out our team sheets. I'd estimate about 36 other DM players in the room at the moment.

9:58 - This really is an impressive line. In thinking about it, I just want to have fun today. I feel like we know this format and what it is; there are too many meta aspects that impact constructed in success. I want to do well, but more than that, I want to meet people and have fun.

9:48 - Turns out other DM players from South Carolina are in front of us. At least we get to talk to people in line!

9:23 - Well, we are here. And the preregistration line is longer than the slackers! Oh well.

That one game only/first player advantage is terrible. Watched Randy's game. His team was better and his skill was better. Shouldn't have lost. I totally pin it on going second.

Really glad to see the first person advantage happening and I'll explain why:
Because they need to fix it! Maybe if after all this they tally up all the 2nd player losses vs 1st player, they'll adjust the real issue, not perceived issues due to this main concern! They've made a game that is entirely too fast to lethal due to this one thing.

I'm torn on that and here's why - for all the things that PXG makes viable, it brings bad with it and this turn one thing is a part of that. I think the global should exist in some form but I don't like changing/adding major rules because of the stuff made possible by one global ability.

But I agree- could be a catalyst for a fix.

Great job on the coverage guys. And I concur with the hope that the first turn player win ratio is being tracked to motivate a change in the rules.

One sour note though: Only 40 players in each event, with pretty much the same people in both? That's sad. I feel like WK needs to split up their Open and Championship events and put them for each game in locations that would have the highest turnout. I'm not saying that this would be the best location, but I'm pretty confident that if it were in Seattle that both qualifiers would have been full. When stores are getting close to 20 players for random OP events, that's sign of a very strong local scene.

Are you saying there are only 40 people there? I would love to go, but living in Utah makes that an expensive trip. I have seen the promo cards given out, and I am wishing I went just to grab those!

I believe there were more unique players than that.

I don't understand the logic behind going second is a guaranteed loss. I watch my opponents buys. I have the ability to adjust my strategy based on what he's doing.

I have never experienced a disadvantage simply from going second; number don't lie though. Maybe during open play at my FLGS I'll just defer so I can work on my 'going second' game.
