• TRP Site Tip - Using @Mentions

We have a new feature: Twitter-style "@" mentions. Basically that means when you're on the site and you type "@" followed by a person's username (e.g., @Ken ) a couple of things will happen when you submit your post, comment, or blog article:

    1. the username will turn into a link to the user's profile (as you can see in the example above), and
    2. the person you mentioned will get a notification email with a link to the post/comment where you mentioned them.

Why would you want to do this? Mostly just to make sure a person sees a particular reply or post. You might be trying to bring someone in on an existing conversation or just replying to a given person and think they'd want to see it.

Another similar feature we deployed at the same time is that you will also now get a notification email whenever someone quotes you in one of their posts. The idea is again to make sure you don't miss out on conversation you might be interested in.

But let's say you don't want to receive these emails. It's very easy to turn them off. Go to your settings page (link in the top right corner of your screen), and on the page that loads, near the bottom of the left sidebar, click on the "User Tagging" settings link to access a screen that gives you control over these new features.

I find these new features to be pretty handy, but as always, we want to know what you think of them!

Good idea here, Ken. It will allow us to get an immediate notification if something is wrong on the forum. Thanks!
