• Let's Chat!

    We've got another request feature we're testing out: a chat room! If you want to try it out, go to this link and have a look. If you're logged in to The Reserve Pool site, you'll automatically be logged into the chat room.

    It has all of the basic features you'd expect from a chat room, and it also integrates very nicely with the forum, giving you notifications of PMs you've received as well as when stuff is happening elsewhere on the site (new threads/posts, when various milestones have been reached, etc.)

    Notice that I said we're testing out this feature. It might not stick around. Here's the deal. Yes, chat is awesome, but it also could lead to discussion that should take place in the forums instead happening in the chat. Posts made in the blogs, comments, or forums has more long-term value to the community than chat. That's because chat is ephemeral, and is only seen by those who were there real-time, while post/threads can last a long time can be rediscovered later in searches.

    While we want to avoid killing the discussion elsewhere on the site, we do like chatting too so we're trying this feature out, but because of those concerns, the chat is deliberately somewhat hard to find right now. You'll only find it via the link above and in the "Community" menu you'll find in the navigation bar when browsing the forums. Yes, we understand that could hurt the viability of the chat room, but as mentioned, it's a balancing act. (We may re-balance things later after getting feedback.)

    But don't let our concerns stop you from opening a new window, hanging out, and chatting! Just be mindful to post the important stuff elsewhere too! I have a suspicion that finding others to chat with may be hit and miss for a while. The best I can say is if you're interested in chatting, log into the chat room, say something ("Hello") so the system lists you as active (it's unfortunate that you do have to do that) and then stay as long as you can. Somebody should come along. I'll be hanging out in there most of the daytime hours Thursday, so if nothing else, try it then. I'd love to shoot the breeze with you!

    As always, we're interested in knowing what you think about this feature.

      I have been thinking that this would be a great way to let people know you will be or are at the time on Vassal. I know that I have gotten in a Hangout with some guys, so it's easy to message them, but for those not in Hangouts this would be good to just say, "Hey, on Vassal and ready to play if you guys are."

      I wish the chat was a bit taller. 300px is a little tight. Optimally, it'd use the entire height of the window, but a conservative 500px ain't bad either.

      *sigh*

      Another feature that only works on mobile if you go to the Full Site first, and then only if you can somehow get the floating menu bar to not get in the way, which I never can.

      @Ken, please make this stuff work better on mobile!

      :cries:

      You can always open the console (Ctrl+Shift+K) and then paste this:
      document.getElementsByClassName( "dbtech_vbshout_frame" )[0].style.height="500px"

      I just edited the CSS directly. 300px -> 900px since I'm nasty.

      But obviously, that's not a convenient solution for everyone, especially if if their brain shuts down the second they see developer tools or code.

      Seems like chat should be promoted more. If I popped on the site and could see how many "active" chatters there were above, I might be inclined to chat, too! I know it's intentionally hidden, but I feel like it's already dead, so let's try a different approach?

      Did anyone mention the chat needs to flash the tab when there's human activity chattin'? 'cause it does.
