• Reading the Rainbow Age of Ultron Draft Episode 9 The Champ

Welcome back folks! Last time we talked about making tough decisions when we don't have very many good options. Today we are going to bring in a celebrity guest, as we are wrapping up our Age of Ultron Draft series. With us today is none other than the 2015 Canadian National Champion JT "Homash" Horsfall. JT is going to have one doozy of a choice in front of him as he is gifted with a glut of must have cards and must make the decision of which one combos best with his other options.

Here is our Friendly Neighborhood Rainbow:

For those that don't know, JT isn't a Canadian. He simply traveled over the boarder to snatch up the coveted Maple leaf trophy, and while recovering from his Tim Horton's breakfast, was able to beat out all comers for the title. While he didn't make a top 8 showing at worlds, he did make an impact with his turn three win strategy, and taking that same strategy, with a new gimmick to Gencon, swept the competition only dropping a single game all weekend. But that my friends, is constructed, let' see how the champ handles our favorite format, the Rainbow Draft!

Jocasta 4, Well, we know he's a champ, but does he really have to get championship luck in his draft packs? Jocasta is 100% the card you take. She's among the top 5 most valuable cards, she has almost no true counters in raft, and she has some great ways to just blow your opponent up with no chance for retaliation. Knowing we've pulled this Super Rare, we're going to look at everything else in this pack as a "will this come back around to me and will I want it then?"
Spider-Woman 7, This is by far the best Spider-Woman in the set, and would be a great pick up as she clears sidekicks and cheap characters with championship skill, but we can be pretty sure she's not going to get passed up by 5 other players. JT doesn't expect her to come back around.
Wasp 5, Plenty of Wasps in the bundle, and each of them is pretty powerful. This one combos well with an aggressive style and multiple globals. Jocosta doesn't really combo well with this Wasp though because she can ping off Jocasta's invulnerability. JT doesn't expect this lady to come back around either.
Odin 6, By far the best Odin in the set, and a really great combo piece with Thor. However he's a bit expensive if we don't have the ramp or support for him, and with us investing in making Jocasta our win condition, I'm not sure he's worth keeping an eye out for. JT expects this guy to come back around, and is considering taking him, if there's nothing better.
Wasp 5, For similar reasons to the above, this Wasp doesn't pair well with Jocasta. She is a solid card though, and JT doesn't expect her to come back around.
Red Skull 5, Expensive, unreliable and overall not impressive. JT expects this guy to wheel, but isn't planning on taking him.
Phil Coulson 4, Two of this guy in the same pack? Expect this guy to get picked up like hotcakes. He buffs your sidekicks so well, and for such a cheap investment that you can be swinging for 20 on turn 4 or 5 if you roll enough sidekicks. JT hopes one of these comes around but isn't optimistic.
Moondragon 4, Nope. JT thinks she'll wheel, but also says nope.
Jocasta 4, Well, what do we have here? This Jocasta is actually pretty terrible. her ability truly doesn't do much for us, and he cost is too high for what she gives. However, that likely means she'll wheel. JT hopes she wheels around so he can take a second die for his Super Rare.
Iron Man 2, This is the Villain maker. An integral part of many combos in this set, he's pretty amazing. His stats are also great, but with Jocasta, he fights for a 4 cost bolt slot. JT doesn't think he'll need this guy, and knows the global will be there if someone else brings him.
Hawkeye 2, Nopers. JT thinks this guy is a terrible idea, be cause he helps your opponent get closer to lethal.

Alrighty, well that was a relatively easy first pack, JT is feeling the stride of the rainbow draft and getting comfortable. Now I drop the hard decisions.

"So many good choices... Wait is that the common Loki too?!?!?" -- JTHomash

Ultron Drone 3, admittedly the worst choice of the three drones, this guy is still good. He brings the global and in draft, he gives you an extra die for your other drones. JT would love the global, as it pairs well with Jocasta, but thinks that he's not going to get any other drones with only 3 in the rainbow.
Gamora 7, This rare Gamora is a great character. She can eliminate your opponent's key characters, especially paired with something like Cone of Cold global, and your opponent can only prevent her from doing that for so long before that 3 life takes it's toll. JT Loves all versions of this girl, and hopes to get at least one of them.
Spider-Woman 7, we've talked about how this lady is the worst Spider-Woman. JT agrees.
Captain America 2, Both of these guys are in here. This situation would usually let us guarantee that we could draft both of them, but this guy is just too expensive for that to be worthwhile. characters that give you resources are only good if you don't have to get resources to get them. JT didn't even look at these guys twice.
Beast 4, Cheap fists are amazing in this set, because of the plethora of good fist globals. However, without one of those on our horizon, we probably would be wasting a pick taking beast this early. JT is keeping his eye on this Beast, and will snag him IF he wheels, but he doesn't expect that to happen.
Gamora 7, Common Gamora, also a champ of a draft character. She is cheaper than the other versions, and if paired with the drone global can also single out an opponent's character and guarantee it's death. Any Gamora is a good Gamora for JT.
Groot 3, common Groot is a good defensive body. but don't draft for defense until you have a way to kill your opponent from behind that defense. JT doesn't think this Groot is worth taking in draft.
Loki 3, Only 3 Loki dice, and Loki is an amazing counter to the Ultron Drone strategies. You can either remove the capture effect from a single drone and block with your large defense, or you you can counter the Ultron's Capture trigger, and prevent the 3 bonus damage and block with a sidekick. JT knows that, especially after the recent Rules forum ruling, that Loki is a great counter to Jocasta, and thus he takes the weapon from his enemies, so that they can't use it against him, and he can bring it to bear on them.
Nick Fury 3, He's a cheap Avenger, and a mask. If we were building a Gladiator team, I would take him. We're not, and JT doesn't want anything to do with him.
Daredevil 4, Cheap fist characters, like we have said before. JT hopes a Gamora will wheel, but if they don't , he'll likely take this guy or Beast.
Gamora 7, WOW, all three Gamora's in the same pack. Maybe one of them actually will wheel to JT. For now though, Loki is the top pick. One thing JT plans to look out for is his opponent having this global and using it to KO Jocasta after she blocks.

So, JT's plan is an army of Jocasta's, first picking every one of her dice so that he can get all 4. Then buy and field them all and hope to wall his opponent off from being able to ever consider swinging at him. Then use something like Coordinated stroke to proc her damage reflection on his turn, and with a Loki on the board that's 6 damage a turn reflected to his opponent. JT says he's looking to get more Gamoras, make to take all the Loki's he can find, and if he's lucky enough to get passed a drone, he'll be snagging that too. Baron Zemo Rare is also something he's hoping to get, but the common interests him as well. Anything to make his action dice more reliable. He might also pick up Loki's Scepter, depending on the version that's out there, and possibly even use that to proc Jocasta if he needs to. JT also mentioned the OP Basic Action Takedown, which does a solid 4 damage spike to our opponent if we target our own Jocasta with it. All in all, this draft looks like another event that JT "Homash" Horsfall is going to become the champion of.

Can't wait to hear what others might do. Despite the abundance of draft must haves, I felt like the choices were made for me. Hard and easy at the same time. The thing that locked in Loki for me was the dice count. Getting one of the 3 and knowing I would probably only see Loki in one or two matches made him the best option.

Honestly, talking through this live with @Shadowmeld was remarkably fun. I recommend taking the time to mock draft in advance of your local events. If you get a feed, open packs in 6s and go through the whole thing with this mindset. The reps will help make decision making in live events easier for sure.

I agree, it's been really good to think through each of these and then compare with Shadowmeld.

Since the best part of the Drone for Jocasta IS the Global, then Loki is probably the best first pick out of the 2nd pack. Besides, if you can leave a draft with a Jocasta SR, you've pretty much already won for the day... no matter how well you do in the draft. To be super baller (as the kids say), show everyone that you drafted the SR Jocasta, then DO NOT use her. If you win, stories will be sung about your dicey dicey prowess. If you lose, well, you should have used Jocasta.

      That is hilarious!
I will be working in the phrase "Well, you should have used Jocasta."
      People will be so confused.

Try taking Jocasta to a constructed AoU and not buying her and see the reactions you get from that...

There are some fun win cons in that set for sure!
