• Dicevatars and More

We've got a couple of small site changes to tell you about today.

    Dicevatars
The first one is Dicevatars, my totally cheesy name for the project I've been slowly working on to make your forum avatars look more like Dice Masters dice. You may have noticed that since our community site opened, when you are in the forums, your avatar is forced square with rounded corners and shaded edges. The online status indicator has always been a burst symbol in the lower left corner. That was the beginnings of trying to make them look like a die.

Tonight I rolled out a couple more changes towards that end. For starters, you will all have a fielding cost, attack, and defense value. Have a look at a few examples:

As you can see, the effect is better on some avatars than on others. It'll improve over time, but it's a start. You'll also see that @RJRetro is no longer the master of his own stats; take that, RJ! Actually, that's not true, but it's fun to say. It's not true because the stats do have meanings. Your attack value goes up the more posts you make, your defense goes up the longer you've been a member on the site, and your (currently not working) fielding cost goes up as you give and receive likes. On the TRP forums, a high fielding cost is a good thing! If you hover your mouse over the stats you'll get an idea of what it takes to earn each level.

Post count and the like used to appear below your avatar. Now because they are ON your avatar they are no longer listed below, saving some space. That should make for a more compact display of forum threads. But where is all this information displayed for those who don't have an avatar? The answer is that now everybody has an avatar. If you don't upload one, we'll generate one automatically for you. Have a look at a few examples:

Sorry, I haven't ported Dicevatars over to the mobile theme. I'm actually putting more time into merging the themes, having just one theme that adapts to whatever screen size you're using, than trying to port things to both of our existing themes. The new theme is a huge project, so don't expect it anytime soon.

    Social Groups
Social groups are nothing new here, but if you are a member of any of them, you'll know that it can be difficult to keep up with activity in them because they have been tucked away on your user profile page. You can still access them there, but what's new today is that you will now see them listed at the bottom of the main forum screen too, just like a regular forums. That should help with keeping track of when there are new posts.

The circled area is where your groups will appear.

If you're not familiar with social groups, have a look at the Social Groups page to see if any are relevant to you. If so, join them. If not, perhaps you'd like to create one. To do so, just hit the Create Group link at the top of that page to get started. (Note: you must be logged in to use social groups).

That's all for today. Holler with any questions you may have!

Yeah, that would be a nice feature.

The plan is to have the system automatically pick up the predominant central color of your avatar and use that, just like DM dice have the same stat and central symbol colors. Do you think that's a good idea?

Barring that, it could be a selection in your UserCP, but thought the auto selection would ve more user friendly.

This is basically what I do in my card generator. You can send me a message if you are interested in my code.

I tried a new die avatar with a blue background with a white logo in the center. It made the numbers black. In that case I'd want white to match the logo in the center.

Auto selection is more user friendly to start people out, but I think ti would be a good idea to let people who care enough to pick their own colour.

My only thoughts on this as a whole, I think it's great. Just so long as it doesn't obscure my Shooting Quasar Dragon.

Well, I never knew Social Groups even existed until now!

Can you be a member of more than one?

Wow, I also had no idea that Social Groups existed. Maybe I should make one for our little San Diego group...

What if you just want to be a 3 cost 0 0 ?
Also can we spin our selves up and down?
I know those are dumb ideas but they just popped into my head.

I didn't know about the social groups either. I'm not seeing them on the forum screen.
