• Starting Ideas: A Deck for Everyone

Hey Folks! No Podcast this week, it has been a regretfully taxing period for the team. My son was sick, Dylan's computer died and has been sent out for repair and RJ has been swamped with work covering the Canadian national elections(couldn't the queen just appoint someone so RJ wouldn't be busy?). Fortunately, the rest of the team has kept up with the myriad of spoilers and announcements that have hit this week. I did get a team built for everyone, and got some practice of it in, so it is ready to go for you all.

    And here it is.

This team may seem like an amalgamation of random cards, but what it really is, is a series of starter cards that provide some solid answers to the strategies of the current meta. The fact that these cards are all starters, means that in the process of buying the basic actions one would need to lay this game, you can pick up this team with the most minimal of purchases. $70 may not seem cheap, but if you were going to buy that many starters anyway, knowing you're going to get a solid team out of it really helps. This team definitely has room to build from, but for a starting team, it does very well, and teaches many of the games more advanced mechanics.

To start off, we bring Halfling Thief for a cheap economy character we can buy when we only have 2 energy to spare. When she gets in rotation she can give us a solid bag reset mechanic, and even churn a die we just bought out on the same turn. She is also an adventurer so she does wonders for disrupting the kobold engines that are being used lately, especially with the new kobold Lantern ring combo.

Next we have this solid work horse removal tool. Storm does wonders at removing problem threats and forcing our opponent to cycle his bag to get them back out again. She also gives a solid stat line for us to do polymorph tricks with, and a reason for us to swing out with her every turn.

This monster is a hidden gem of a card. Gelatinous Cube lets us wall up against sidekick teams and only risk one character to do it, while also giving us a tool to capture problem characters indefinitely. Got a Green Goliath wave clearing your team? Land this Gelatinous Cube and use your Jade Giant to KO their Hulk, One shield energy later and your opponent now has to buy another Hulk, or get a KO on your Cube.

I was looking for an answer to Lantern Ring teams, and the only thing I could really find was this guy. He would eb the first card i would replace as my collection grew, and i would look to either get the 4 cost non-starter version, or a better Lantern Ring counter card. In the meantime though, he's here to prevent direct damage; simple and straight forward.

This Batman does some great things for us, especially if we buy a polymorph early. He does some small chip damage with his ability, every time an action die is played, but more importantly he gives us a sold prep mechanism to ramp after we poly out a character. Added to all of that is his cheap cost to stats ratio, and we're in business with this guy.

The power this card has to stay alive is just mind boggling. This is the only UXM card on this team (other than Transfer power) so to mitigate the investment you could drop him for a card from another set, however, the combo Magneto provides with Polymorph can be quite valuable, and for a defensive character he has such good stats for cost. (if you do drop Tranfer power too, bring Magic Missile to ping your Hulk with)

This guy is one of our win conditions for our team. He chunks 2 damage from our opponent each turn, unless they are running lanterns. If they are running lanterns, it encourages them to wall them up against us, and not swing through without lethal. He also has a solid stat line for cost, and gives us shields if we miss a character face.

What would a starter team be without a Hulk on it. Jade giant gives such solid board clear that can act to mitigate problem targets like Zombie Magneto or Green Goliath. We don't have a way to easily trigger him, but could always swap Magic Missile in for our Transfer Power Basic action.

To start off, field as many SKs as you can early, and buy a 2 3 or 4 cost mask character unless your opponents brings pxg. If they do, then buy that halfling and PXG 2x if you can. Roll right into either Polymorph and batman or Sinestro, depending on available ramp. Grab answers like Hulk or Cube as needed, but truly, look for the economy that Magneto provides to power you through the enemy's defenses.

Don't expect to win every game, but this team is solid enough that you can put up a solid fight against most opponents. Build upon it and expand as your collection develops, and work towards the team you truly want to play. This team is a great starting point for any new player, lots to learn about, but enough answers that you shouldn't just get blown out every time you play.

The podcast will return next week, and you should be seeing spoilers and ASM stuff through the rest of the month and into release date, tentatively confirmed as November 11th. Thanks as always for reading, following and listening to us here at The Reserve Pool, and Keep Rolling!

Sadly, Canadia is one of those countries with strict Moose Labor Laws, so they cannot be appointed to do much more than standing still - luckily a job fit for internet disruption.

Just realized how strong that Magneto will be with ASM effects that Sacrifice a character...

Yup, I fully well expect him to do wonders in ASM. I expect common Maria Hill to be useful that way too, especially with any "sacrifice two characters" effects.

Back on topic, I just realized this too, and the thought of MJ and Aunt May being integral to some teams makes the little kid in me smile
