• Tech News - DiceMasters Apps

Good morning! Welcome to our new (recurring?) feature - Tech News! I'd like to use this space to spotlight some of the cool technological things having to do with our hobby. Today we'll take a look at three different mobile Apps that have been designed for DiceMasters, and that are still current and actively being updated. So, without further ado...

App Name: Sunday Morning Comix League
    Platform: iOS (link here)
    Price: Free!

What is your favorite thing about Dice Masters?
My Favorite thing about Dice Masters is that it combines deck building strategy games with the randomness of dice. I grew up playing Dungeons and Dragons, so rolling dice always reminds me of the fun I had rolling dice as a child.

Why did you decide to create an App for Dice Masters?
Well actually, the app started off as a home-brew webpage for rules aggregation. So many rules on the web forum but nothing similar to Magic the Gathering's Oracle. So I wrote that in PHP/MYSQL, then one day was in a dead spot and could not access the Internet from there, and said "well, s***. Why don't I just port the website to UI/Core Data for my phone?" So, I started scanning in my collection, and the rest took off from there.

What are the top 5 features your App offers?
Full Text Search, Every Card Image in the Game (yes, I currently have a 100% complete collection), Concept Team Building, Future Sets Spoilers are all there, Every Card in Set Order.

What are 2-3 things you want to or are working to implement?
Well, I had originally asked permission from @Loran (Ryan) of DiceMastersDB to backend my teams and collections into his website. So when you stored your collection information that they would stay in sync. @Loran agreed, but alas due to timing conflicts, it has been patiently waiting. As you are aware, there is not a collections feature in the app and while you can build teams, they are missing dice counts for each card. So the next 2 - 3 features I am working on is 1) Collections with DiceMastersDB, 2) Teams with DiceMastersDB, and 3) a Teams Browser / Search feature that uses the teams stored on DiceMastersDB, So that is what the immediate plans are; longer term. I have a fully functional tagging system that can be updated via database updates that we are starting to play around with. Try Searching "Little Cup" or "LC" to get an idea of what I am talking about. Need to find a Ramp card? Just search "Ramp".

Do you have any plans to port to a different OS?
    NO, just no.

What is the best way for someone to get in contact with you for bugs/feature requests/etc?
Actually, there are two sure fire ways. One is via TRP. Messaging me through the PM system here is seen right away ( @wargfn ). The other is I try to keep a pretty good handle on my email filters so, it is possible it will take some time but that is another way. The last way is that I have shared my real name on the Apple Store, so PM via Facebook does also work.

    Anything else?
I wrote the application that I wanted. There has been several really good suggestions, thank you @IsaacBV and @Shadowmeld , that if I can work out will be implemented. Dice Masters is my hobby game. So as long as that remains the case, the application will stay as uptodate as possible. I enjoy the people I have meet through The Reserve Pool and Dice Masters. The name Sunday Morning Comix League came from the FLGS in which I play, because we played that Comicbook Hero game with dice on Sunday Mornings.

    App Name: Sidekick
    Platform: iOS (link here)
    Price: $0.99

What is your favorite thing about Dice Masters?
My favorite thing about Dice Masters is the community. I may be more of a lurker myself, but I love the discussion that goes on about this game. In person, everyone I have ever played with has been a great sport and I've always had a great time playing.

Why did you decide to create an App for Dice Masters?
Some of my friends and I started talking about creating an app for Dice Masters around a year ago. There weren't any up to date apps at the time, and my iOS using friends really wanted one. One friend, who is a graphic designer, even offered to handle designing the icon and images used in the app. So, even though I use Android myself, I started on an iOS app first. I thought an app would be a great asset to the game.

What are the top 5 features your App offers?
    • Catalog of all current Dice Masters cards downloaded from an online database, so I can update the catalog without waiting for an app update.
    • Collection management and Team Building, backed up online if you create an account.
    • Robust search feature that allows search by title, subtitle, text, cost, energy type, affiliation, rarity, and set, with more options coming soon.
    • Sleek, streamlined user interface.
    • In app life tracker.

What are 2-3 things you want to or are working to implement?
    • One of my first ideas was a way to simulate a draft and open random packs. That's something I would love to implement.
    • More search options.
    • Tablet optimization so I can release on iPad.

Do you have any plans to port to a different OS?
I'm not currently working on any ports, but there is a chance I may port Sidekick to Android if there is enough demand, since I use an Android phone myself.

What is the best way for someone to get in contact with you for bugs/feature requests/etc?
aschuetterapps@gmail.com is the best way to contact me.

    App Name: Transition Zone
    Platform: Android (link here)
    Price: Free!

What is your favorite thing about Dice Masters?
I actually haven't been able to get into the game itself after a few tries, so I don't play it. However, I definitely do enjoy all of the cool looking dice! Also, I do enjoy seeing all of the new cards when I update the app for a new set, even though it can be a bit hectic to get everything ready quickly so that everyone can use it.

Why did you decide to create an App for Dice Masters?
My co-worker dove right into the game and mentioned that the apps that existed at the time only had the AvX cards. I decided that there was an unfilled need there, and decided to create the app to teach myself Java. I've learned a lot so far and plan on continuing to learn as I keep trying to improve the app.

What are the top 5 features your App offers?
The main feature is that it allows users to track and view their collection. To help with that, it includes full images of all cards as well as most important information in a list at a glance. Users can also create and save teams. There is a search feature that lets users look for cards with varied criteria that helps with managing their collection and building their teams. Finally, the app includes a simple to use life counter for matches.

What are 2-3 things you want to or are working to implement?
My main concern right now is figuring out a way for users to sync their collection/teams across devices, this may also allow me to easily include an option to export that information as well in an easily usable format. I also want to revamp the team viewing page so that all of the information is available on one screen instead of needed to scroll. Another thing that I'd like to include is a way to let users easily find rulings on cards, so they can use the app as a resource for that during matches and save time over looking it up themselves. A couple of minor things that will make it in a future update are the card/set numbers for the cards, a way to update your collection with everything from a starter set at the click of a button, and fully searchable card text.

Do you have any plans to port to a different OS?
I never came up with any real plans to release Transition Zone on iOS, and now that there are other good apps available for it (that actually have more than the first set in them!), I don't imagine I'll ever end up porting it over.

What is the best way for someone to get in contact with you for bugs/feature requests/etc?
dmtransitionzone@gmail.com (this question made me realize I should make an email account for the app instead of just using my personal one :P)

    Anything else?
If there are any suggestions to improve the app (that I didn't mention above), I'm very open to suggestions. This app is for all of you, so I want to make it be what you want it to be. Also send any bugs or problems in and I'll get them fixed if I can!

I really appreciate you guys for making the apps and allowing us to use them. This article opens up players eyes to apps that some of us knew and some that we did not know. Thanks!

SMCL is a great app. I just wish there was a filter in the "Teams" section.

Wow! Sunday Morning Comix League is sweet! Just download and update in settings and you're good to go with a quick database of every set. FUS was already in when I downloaded the app a couple weeks back. The teams feature could use a search feature instead of scrolling through every single DM card. Besides that I love it. Thanks.
