• The More You Know - With MDCVH Vol. 6

Attachment 3727Welcome to the Master Doctor Count Von Homash Mailbag. MDCVHM for short. Lots of real questions in the mailbag this week. Iíll do my best to keep it civil. There are a couple questions Iíll share, but probably canít answer. I still only edited the parts with dirty words. Here we go!

Asking for a friend, what are the advantages and disadvantages to use the Big Entrance BAC? I'll hang up and read your comments offline.
    -jevansfp

MDCVH: The arguments for are in the case of loading up on cheap characters. If you intend on ending the game fast, thereís probably much less downside. If youíre counting dice, and the benefits of doing so are overwhelming, the cons probably outweigh the pros in the long run. With the Professor X Global, full ramp is more valuable and you will find that later in the game rarely does Big Entrance find a way to be helpful. At most it gains you one turn and the prevalence of Meraís global means that probably makes your overall team strategy delayed a turn to get your Mera counter out. Then again, a win is a win. Tell your friend the only time to use it is if youíre selling out for a turn 3 kill, but doing so leaves you vulnerable and behind if you miss.

Time for your background check: What are you a Master of? What are you a Doctor of? Where are you a Count at? Also, I need a urine sample. For a friend.
    -jevansfp

MDCVH: Master of Dice. Doctor of Winning. Count in Latveria. Sure thing Ė just tell me where to ship it. Your friend is nosey.

Long time reader, second time writer. What do you think about using life gain cards, like hitting Iron Man Philanthropist with Magic Missle's global enough times to keep your life at 20, and then stalling for time in tournament play, hoping for time to run out and a shallow but technical victory? Follow up question: Would you consider yourself to be a Philanthropist?
    -jevansfp

MDCVH: Not losing is not the same thing as winning. However, there is untapped potential here. As long as it is combined with a reasonable win condition, the strategy has merit. I think at this point the best version of this involves Nick Fury - Mr. Anger (from AVX) to get Iron Man, Hulk, and maybe Captain America fielded for free so energy can be spent on buying your characters, pinging them, and ramping. I must be a philanthropistÖI just gave you a great idea for a team.

Last time you mentioned, "be prepared to keep character dice out of your used pile to prevent an opponent from being able to use Poly defensively against you." Could you explain how you would do that?
    - AgentJ

MDCVH: Avoid spending character dice as energy when you know your opponent will be drawing Poly soon. They canít poly out your Hulk or Jinzo or Red Dragon if thereís no Kobold or Morphing Jar in your used pile to bring in. You also might need to avoid buying that last Kobold if Poly is coming up soon. Donít sacrifice board position for a meager superfluous purchase Ė itís never worth it.

What are the top three things players can do to become more competitive? I hear a lot of talk about piloting. Could you explain how one goes about becoming a better pilot?
    - AgentJ

MDCVH: Play. Play. Play. Play your team, your preferred style or archetype. Play the ones you donít like. Play the ones you struggle with. Play against people you know and people you donít. Play your local meta and play other metas. Play against new players and experienced players. Learn to teach others how to see things. Always look for lethal. Reading can be helpful, but the best thing to do is play.

Sometimes when people discuss ambiguous wordings or rules, the discussions turn heated. Can you tell me how to win those? Bonus points if you give me tips on how to discourage others from playing the game. Thanks!

MDCVH: To start with you need toÖ

Iíll interrupt you right there, MDCVH Ė letís keep this positive.
    - JThomasH2

MDCVH: Iím positive that to start with you need toÖ

Ok, so it looks like we probably should move on.
    - JThomasH2

If someone was being a REDACTED publicly to other DM players online through social media, but then you met that person in real life at a WKO event or even the upcoming World Championships at Origins, how would you interact with that person? Would you hold their online interactions against them?
    - Anonymous

Alright, Iíll make the executive decision to skip to our last question.
    - JThomasH2

If your response is to humiliate them through beating them in DM and bragging about it, does that make you an awful person?
If your response would be to throat punch them, do you think enough other non-REDACTED DM players would lie for you to avoid criminal charges?

I promise all of those questions were asked by actual readers. Somewhat sad there for the last ones, I know. Hopefully the next mailbag will continue the trend of having reader questions but maybe not so many questions with a negative tone. Any final thoughts, MDCVH?

Thatís it! Weíre done for the week!

Thanks! I wasn't sure how to handle those questions, or if I should include them, but I wanted to at least attempt it...

probably just boiled over frustrations from rules discussions. A little levity helps.

Prismatic Spray or Zombie Magneto come to mind. Jinzo is also a reasonable counter if you're focused on 5-7 damage attackers and not a single one shot kill...

Mera does not target or affect attacking characters.

This feature is now my online equivalent to the "news" shows on Comedy Central; your answers are funny, but I think I learn as much here as in some of the more serious features. Thank you for making me laugh while I learn things about the game. Tying in 2 of your points together (and because this way I get to brag to a larger audience), I just won a game using Big Entrance to buy all 4 of my Beast Genetic Expert Dice on Turn 3, and then just kept hitting my opponent with targeted KOs by putting Cerebro Cybernetic Intelligence on his card. Thanks again for the laughs.

I take that as a real compliment, thank you! Frankly, I had considered dropping the series for a while. I think the community response to this bit of satire both here at TRP and on Facebook has been amazing, and I take it all as a great sign of where this community is, has been, and is going.
