• D&D Faerun Under Siege- Video Review


    Hey folks. As hinted at in my article yesterday, I'm pleased to present my first video for The Reserve Pool: D&D Faerun Under Siege Video Review. Thanks to the wonderful people at WizKids, I reveal and discuss my favorite of each of the starter characters and discuss all of the Basic Actions included with the set. My wife Melissa then joins me to open 5 bonus packs and discuss their contents. Thrill with us as we get our exclusive first look at one the set's Super Rares!



    The Faerun Under Siege coverage doesn't end here though. We've got all 8 Super Rares and will be revealing them later this week! Stay tuned!

      Thanks for recording and posting this, Flexei. And thanks to your better half as well. Set looks like it's going to be a lot of fun. One minor gripe - you kept misreading (or mispronouncing) Minion Whatchamacallit as Minor Whatchamacallit, which I did find a bit irksome.

      (Side note - This has nothing to do with the video, but I'm actually a little bit freaked that Whatchamacallit was actually a pre-existing word in the spellcheck dictionary here. I'm not sure whether to be impressed or disturbed by the thoroughness that seems to imply.)

      I unfortunately misread one of the early cards as "minor" instead of "minion" and just kept assuming they were all "minor" as I progressed through the set. My apologies for that. I obviously should have known better.

      I love videos. Are you going to be doing more videos in the future? I would love to watch videos about dice masters instead of reading articles. I learn by seeing/doing so when people explain things I don't normally understand unless you 'show' me. So yes to more videos please and thank you!

      am i wrong or is the cockatrice from the starter the same as the one pulled from the booster?

      You are correct. I mention that fact while going over the starter Cockatrice cards. The text is very slightly different ("When fielded" vs "When Cockatrice is fileded"), but the effect is identical.

      If I had not already started to use D&D cards and dice, this video would have tipped me over. What I'm just amazed by, primarily coming from the Marvel and DC sets, are the incredibly cheap Level 3 fielding costs for beat sticks (Hill Giants excepted). The Balor costing 2 to field a 7A 7D is amazing, but the Beholder costing only 1 to field a 6A 5D is stunning, with the cool "bag of holding" dice storage effect thrown in. In comparison, Batman is a 3 fielding cost for a 6A 6D. I can see someone using their Constantine to keep me from fielding Vulture when my Silver Sable is on the table not being much happier when the dust clears with some of these bad boys. Just as a side note, adding Hell Hound to the "Bitey Scratchy Brigade" with Cheetah and Hawkman looks like a lot of fun, too. Thanks for the video ride along.

      I think WK likes the 8, 4 in set 4 single die, SRs. 4 SRs was just too easy a set to complete and limited the collector form buying more than a case or so. This way the Collector and the secondary market have a reason to open more feeds. This keeps the market healthy, while not bleeding folks dry Magic style. The extra Commons Uncommons and even Rare make their rounds as freebies or trade bait and new players get a diversity of product to collect.

      If you look at old 4 SR sets, they're relatively hard to collect for newer players because they aren't on the shelf. So, new players are forced to trade with collectors that over purchased early. This means that that one rare you want from AvX UxM and DnD is harder to find because fewer packs were opened looking to find SRs. For the long run health of the scene and set availability, I actually prefer the 8 SRs because it builds a more robust economy.

      I've been meaning to start doing some Dice Masters instructional videos for my LGS that I can share here as well, and obviously if I have the opportunity to do more previews like this one I'll certainly jump at the chance.

      I still think I need to iron out a few things with my recording setup and process though.

      A few questions popped up for me looking at the BACs.

      Cloudkill lacks the Continuous keyword, but states that you deal 1 damage to each opposing character and the characters cannot block or attack unless your opponent pays 1 for each. How can you play this on your opponents turn to tax them with this, when you can only play Actions (aside from continuous) on your turn?

      Shocking Grasp states that you can deal 1 damage to a target character (your or opponent) and if that die is knocked out by this damage, you place that die into your prep area. Does this mean we can effectively steal dice from our opponent, permanently?

      Cloudkill: If you Play cloudkill and then control an opposing character it can't attack. This is the only current interaction this die has, but hey, that's how its written. In the end it doesn't matter, but it could affect the way that card interacts in the future. Nothing wrong with this cards wording, just highly situational.

      Shocking Grasp: This Die is ALWAYS a different die than That Die. This is not that. This and That are different things. THIS =/= THAT. No, you can't steal this because it's already yours. That however still dies. (also you explaination says Place that die, but the card says place this die)

      Good catch, I overlooked THIS. I figured I was reading something wrong. As for Cloudkill, that would be the only situation that would make sense, but that rarely occurs and I can't help but feel this card was misworded.

      The same situation happened with Pandora's Box back in JLA, and WK simply said, that wording covers niche interactions and could matter for future game mechanics.

      The intellect devourer is going to be amazing, just saying.

      Oh and also, not to nitpick, but the global that knocks out a character for fist fist, it would really only be useful against hulk on your own turn since you can't use a global until your opponent passes priority. It would still knock it out after they were done knocking out your characters, but could not interrupt them after the first trigger.

      With the Hulk interaction, I more had my own turn in mind. You can use Magic Missile yourself... take the hit and lose your less that 3D characters and then use the fist fist global to finish the job. Or, if on your opponent's turn they clear your board, at least you can take out Hulk when they're done, you can at least KO Hulk to prevent it from swinging in.

      Or, More importantly, KO their Hulk so that when you reroll your KOed dudes, your opponent can't Hulk them again immediately. It turns the tables on hulk by forcing him to have to KO you on his turn, and not yours.
