• Pretending to Know Stuff Vol.8 (D&D FUS SR spoilers!)

Welcome back for another edition of Pretending to Know Stuff. The unlimited or constructed "Meta" Ė what is in RIGHT NOW. This column will be full of bias. The comments are a place to politely point out where you disagree and let me know what I might have missed.

Today we find ourselves looking forward a little bit to what the Meta may become. I want to first say thanks to our friends at WizKids who have given us a sneak peek at the Super Rares from Dungeons and Dragons: Faerun Under Siege, which is slated for release in just a couple weeks. Weíre breaking them apart into two segments. Today, we will look at the Super Rares with multiple dice counts Ė those which also have Common and Uncommon versions. Come back tomorrow for Isaacís analysis of the unique SRs - those which have a max die count of 1 - in all of their Epic Magical wonder (that's a hint as to what they are). Weíll also take these and other spoilers on in the podcast on Thursday. I put them in the order that I expect them to have impact, least to most. Ready to dive in? Here we go:

Bugbear Ambusher! This is an interesting risk/reward type of removal. Bugbear must be active and itís a 50/50 shot at removing a threat that enters the field Ėat the time it enters the field. So if the threat is a when fielded effect, that effect will have already triggered by the time you get your shot at removal. That means that if youíre using this on a character with a when fielded effect, youíre risking losing Bugbear Ambusher to the used for the privilege of probably having to deal with the when fielded effect of the opposing character again on your opponentís next turn. Be on the lookout for anything that provides an aura or +X Attack to the character for the opportunity to have this ability impact a much higher number of threats. I also think there is some value because it is a character ability, not a global or action (which we are seeing more hate for). For me, the highest utility will be in builds which have the explicit intention of taking advantage of unexpected abilities. Probably the best potential is in replacing a taunt Ė Bugbear Ambusher would KO any level Constantine on any level because Bugbearís lowest attack value is equal to Constantineís highest defense value. Still, itís hard for me to think that this particular ability will have an immediate impact on the Meta because it seems like a much more niche ability with too high of a risk to pair with the consistency that the highest level of competitive teams push for.

BeholderÖThose. Stats. Before we even look at the ability, which was spoiled in The Dice Towerís spoiler video, as well as Trubieís video from over the weekend, we need to look at the stats. My standard way to get a rough idea of whether or not a die has value as a body is taking the average, per level, total from A/D (9 in this case) and divide by purchase cost plus average fielding cost (4.33 in this case). This gives you the Homash Die Value. Anything above 1.5 tends to be valuable. This is more than 2. With an ability that might actually matter. Power Bolt, Magic Missile, Smash!, Crush Card Virus Ė these are cards which could have a much greater impact on board state if Beholder is active. Not only that, but the Global! Now, this time around the global is limited to spells, but what if thereís a spell that allows for the KO of a character? You can pay an energy to save that spell until a turn it could have a bigger impact. This combo only gets better as the list of spells grows. What if you field Beholder (probably for free), field an NPC, use Crush Card Virus to KO your SK to KO a level 2 Hulk of your opponentís? All her NPCs and Hulks are now KOíd. Thereís value, worthwhile combinations, and room for this to get better as the number of spells increases. This will have some impact, and potentially staying power.

Drizzt. The Trubie Killer. Iíve never played D&D. I came to Dice Masters because I love comic book characters. My only exposure to the world of Faerun is through Dice Masters. But I love the art, I love the characters, and I love how tightly the D&D only mechanics fit together. This only pushes that further. Bear with my gushing over this card Ė itís just because Iím a n00b. This ability is fabulous. That it is combined with experience is excellent. But there is no question that this card immediately makes an adventurer team far more viable, and for that we should all be grateful. At 5 cost, itís affordable. At TFC of 3, itís worth the purchase because he has a Homash Die Value of 1.6. His ability has the potential to give a Ďpermanentí +1/+1 to your other characters. Plus, Swarm isnít just Kobolds anymore. It wasnít to begin with, but now Swarm is in , , and energy. I fully expect a massive increase in Swarm in Unlimited events, and this is a spectacular answer to that. If your opponent plans to ramp by Swarm, just having Drizzt on your team can make them think twice or rush some choices, giving you the advantage. And letís be clear about Experience, itís once per turn on your turn, so youíll need to cycle Drizzt to replicate the effect. This will undoubtedly make the actual gameplay of games with these characters that much more interesting. I canít wait to play around with this. I think this is my favorite new character ability that has been spoiled to date.

Ring. ThatglobalissocrazyImightlosemymind. Regenerate is a cool ability. Now I can add it to my most important adventurer, or the one that is most likely to get KOíd. But, frankly, weíre not here to talk about that portion of this card. Assuming this global is not on the common and uncommon versions of this card, this will easily be the most sought after SR from the set. I hope you pull one because buying one could be pricey! If you have an NPC in your used pile, the global is an energy fixer for any energy. Itís also a one sided White Tiger Global. Itís also a magical ďTurn my into a Ē ability. Itís once per turn, on your turn, so youíll need to plan ahead. But this global is better than Parallax in that you get your choice, but itís limited to NPC dice. Did you try to over-ramp using PXG turn two and miss on a 4th ? Problem solved. Need your to be a instead? Done. If youíre ramping to full efficiency later in the game, you should know thereís probably no way this helps you out. But, all the same, it might be worth a character slot to ensure that early game turn goes the way you want. How many Big Entrance teams need one more on turn 2? The option to fix an energy could be incredibly important, and this is the first true time weíve been able to do it for anything but s. Keep in mind that if both you and your opponent bring this global you get to do it twice, but only if you have two NPC dice in your used to start the turn Ė normal Transition Zone rules apply.

What are your thoughts? Do you see any Meta potential that Iíve missed from these cards? Are you as excited as me? Let me know in the comments below, and be sure to come back tomorrow for more Super Rare spoilers!

Iíd be remiss if I didnít once again thank WizKids for choosing to partner with TRP and let us be the ones to spoil a few of these cards. And Iíd be remiss if I didnít thank the TRP community for being what it is Ė itís because this community is alive and active that WK chose to partner with TRP for these spoilers. Itís a whole lot of fun to get to be along for the ride and bring this stuff to you.

    Cheers!

Ring global looks so good. The ability is nice, but I hope the common or uncommon have something more useful for me with that same global.

The Ring looks AWESOME. That would be huge for people that rely on globals requiring specific energy.

How about that Drizzt? Love that I can still run a non-DnD team and have an answer to swarm on it, or be able to pile up some Adventurers and make them stronger. Great cards so far!

That Ring is just crazy. Need a Shield, got a Bolt, Convert it to a Shield. OMG, this is not a must card for every deck. Energy Fixing.

Thanks for the review. Loving those cards. Only hope they saved some awesome abilities for non-super rares.

Thanks for the review JT. The Ring is a fixer for both you and your opponent though, bummer.

Very potent cards, but as you said we have to wait and see if the common and uncommon versions have the same globals or not. Though, I do like Regenerate, that Ring could be quite useful.

I don't mind that in the least. Teams are building for more consistency anyway. Fewer Guy teams seem to be winning PDCs and I think that's only because fine tuning those builds for consistency is slightly behind the tuning of some other archetypes. They seem to be an incredible bomb when they go off, but with enough glass cannon characteristics that they need a little more help. This might be it, and if you're goal is t3 or t4 kill, the help provided to your opponent is minimal. But now that there's a bit of a formula for those teams, what comes out to put this in? Or is it worth it? Time to test for WKO!

Great article. Yes, the Ring is great, but this Epic Beholder just impresses me more the longer I look at it. Like you I was a fan just on the stats. As a semi casual player in an area where single card support is weak, I can't overstate the value of any die that you can get in the starter to assure a good playable number of dice. (I usually buy 2 of every starter now to go ahead and max out the dice in those eight cards.) The more I think about the global, the better it gets (draw 2 prismatic sprays, roll them both as action, have 2 turns worth rather than a wasted action). Add in the active effect like the OP BAC House Of Mystery but more focused and I think it truly resets game possibilities.

The ring, combined with the other ring, bolstered by the beholder! Most interesting, ! Really hoping this comes out on time so I can draft the heck out of this during the regionals!

Thanks JT. I've got over the "I don't bring Globals because I may help my opponent" syndrome. I still have difficulty judging the "this Global is going to help me more than my opponent" balance. An example of that is when I include Red Dragon for its Action die purchase reduction; in one recent game I used this early on, as was my plan, but then in the final turn of the game my opponent was able to do me the final point of damage they needed by buying an Action die with that Global! I've since tweaked the team to use Thousand Dragon Global to gain the purchase reduction without the player damage. A good modification do you think?

I'm seriously pumped about FUS as I think many people are; thanks to you and all the team at TRP for the quality articles ahead of release.

What are the odds that ring global is on the other ring cards? Considering the SR is Ring of Regeneration, the global fits the theme. If the guesses of Ring of Invisibility and Ring of Protection are correct, the global doesn't fit the theme quite as much.
If the global is on all the Ring cards, then it almost turns it into the Parallax Situation where the SR is not quite as good since the global was the best part of it. Although adding regenerate is not too bad.
