• Team Brew Switcharoo 6: Live Free or Dice Hard

Hello again everyone! I would like to try a thought experiment. We will take ten random cards and, by swapping out only four of them for other cards, attempt to make a team that can stand up to the Guy Gardner Rush, the Hulk/Missile Hootenanny, and the Bucky Loves Vixen Tag Team of Ultimate Death. While we can all agree that those three teams are at the top of the Meta right now, I think our mere trifle of a squad might have a good shot at being competitive. Oh, and one more thing about this particular brewing experiment: To help guide our build, we will randomly select a "Meta-Rule" that will place restrictions on what cards can be swapped in.

First, let's randomly select our starting point using the fabulously handy dm.retrobox.eu website. A few clickies (and a moderate amount of cursing at the results) later, and we have our starting lineup:
    http://dm.retrobox.eu/?view&cards=1x...x28fus;3x31avx

And now, to select the rule. Lately, I have been going a little overboard when picking which guideline we will use when constructing teams. Another of these selection shenanigans (having to do with fifteen dogs and a pound of jelly beans) caused me to have to miss another shift at my day job. I called my boss, Chris, and transcribed our conversation for everyone's benefit:

Me: "Hi Chris. Say, what rule should I use for Team Brew Switcharoo this week?"
    Chris: "Who is this?"
    Me: "It's me, Oddball Narwhal."
Chris: "That isn't your real name, you know. Also, aren't you supposed to be at work?"
Me: "Look, some things are more important than work. Did Da Vinci's boss force him to flip burgers while painting the Mona Lisa? Did Hemmingway's boss force him to fold sweaters and ring up customers while writing A Farewell to Arms? Did Hulk Hogan's boss force him to lay some drywall instead of bodyslamming Andre the Giant at Wrestlemania 3?"
Chris: "I don't think any of those things apply in this situation. Get to work... now."
Me: "I need to finish this article. So, what's the rule?"
Chris: "Ok, two things. First, your team cannot contain any bolts. Second, you are fired."

That was very difficult news to handle. I really like characters, but I think we can build a team without them.

First, we will take a look at what is going to work well for us. Goblins are a very nice Swarm character, with decent stats and only costing 2 to purchase. Black Widow can be ok, as long as we have another affiliated character to work with. Finally, the Black Luster Solider here intrigues me. Attack and defense of 5, 6, and 7 are nice on a 5 cost character, and often unused Ritual ability can make for some free fielding... as long as we have bodies to throw at it.

We also have some less helpful characters on this team. Thor is right out, as he is a bolt. Skeleton's ability is too narrow for play outside of the D&D set. The same goes for this version of Anti-Monitor for Unlimited Constructed. It appears that we have a bit of work to do to make this a playable team.

We have two of the four elements of a good team already (energy gettin' and damage dealin'), so we should take a look at filling the other spots. I have the beginnings of a plan for our team. Our first swap will be Thor for Goblin Attack Force - Goblin Squad.

I really like the Global for this character. Using it along with a high attack character, I should be able to remove any threat on the other side. While the character itself isn't great, this version at least doesn't force us to attack each turn (although it cannot block). As a , it'll also pair nicely with the Black Luster Soldier.

If we are going with Goblins (and we might as well), there is an obvious choice for our next character. Since we cannot use , and since we don't want to lose any friends when we sit down to play, Gobby is straight out. However, we can sub in a card that hasn't seen a lot of play but is a pretty powerful direct damage dealer in his own right. My next swap will be Skeleton for Green Goblin - Rotting Goblin.

While we can only stick on die on this character, it might come in handy if our opponent is walling up with SKs. If we are double lucky, we can force a big opposing character to block him so we can re-field and damage again.

Since we are using THAT Green Goblin, it might be time to add another card from the Amazing Spider-Man set. Our third swap will be Dark Magician for White Tiger - Mystical Amulet.

White Tiger does a couple of great things here. First, she gives us a decent attack with the threat of Overcrush. Second, her Global allows us to field a Sidekick (thinning out our bag) and forces our opponent to do the same (setting up some Zobby action). Finally, since she is a character, she gives that nice fist bump to Black Luster Soldier.

The team is really coming together now. With the possible addition of Overcrush, and the multitude of energy I expect to have, we want to add a card that will take advantage of one while buffing the other. My final swap will be Power Bolt for Cone of Cold.

This is a classic, and for very good reason. The Global will allow us to pump up our blocked attackers. Getting +2 Attack for every spent is a fantastic value. Why swap out Power Bolt? Two reasons. Reason the first: Chris said no bolts. While I know that he meant the bolt energy type, I am trying to get a good reference from him for my job applications. Second, Power Bolt can often be a liability. I don't want to force something into my buying order that I didn't already plan on using. Besides, the Chainmail might come in handy to keep a Goblin fielded.

The team appears to be set. After scattering dice willy-nilly across the team, here is the final set-up.
    http://dm.retrobox.eu/?view&cards=2x...131bff;3x28fus

    x3 x2 x4 x4
    x1 x2 x2 x2

Ideally, this team will be brutal slow aggro. We will want to start by Goblins (as many as we can lay our grubby paws on). If we miss our fists, we can always purchase one of the other 2 cost characters to start piling some warm bodies on the fire. We will also start using White Tiger's Global on turn 2, hoping to put some Sidekicks in the field.

Eventually, we want to either purchase Green Goblin (once SKs reach a critical mass), or work up to the Black Luster Soldier. If we miss the energy face on a Goblin or other 2 cost on the same roll as the Solider, we can use his Ritual to field him at no cost. On turns that we field White Tiger, we have no problems Sacrificing something to give her that Overcrush. We will then force a block using Goblin Attack Force's Global, then pump her up with Cone of Cold. Hopefully, we get through some nice damage and she is KO'd, letting us repeat the cycle. GAF's Global can also allow us to have some limited removal, assuming we can swing in with a large enough character to KO the thing we are forcing to block.

Our team certainly has challenges. Like a lot of Swarm teams, it looks like it might be a little slow out of the gate. It also will have problems handling hard control/counter teams. But, overall, I feel like we've put together a reasonably decent team.

So, what do you think? Did our team turn out as well as you thought from the original line up of 10 cards? Did I miss an obvious swap that would have taken this team to the next level? Should we have held on to the Dark Magician, and swapped out the Soldier instead?

Sometimes, looking at all of the choices available when building can be daunting. There are almost 1300 cards to choose from, and we can find ourselves relying on the same ones every time. Hopefully, this though experiment will let us think a little differently about building, and show us a combo or two we hadn't thought of... even if not directly.

Thank you very much for reading. Until next time, keep creating combos, brewing boffo bands of battlers, and throwing things at the wall to see what sticks!

Great article, as always. When I saw the 10 draw I originally thought you had pulled one of the toughest random hands yet, but this team makes me a believer. As for the inspirations I take away, not everyone has, or can get the Super Rares so Zobby might not be available. But, I see no reason why anyone playing the Overcrush White Tiger (Starter Card), Cone of Cold (Starter Card), can't also access the Overcrush Hill Giant (Starter Card) as a basis for a Fist team that punches hard for little cost. And if you have the Zobby, too, so much the better. I could see this three or four card combo anchoring a Hulk team, and I may have to put it together to see how it works for me. Thanks again for the inspiration.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm one of those unfortunates that does not, yet, have Zobby. That being said, I was very happy with the turn this team was able to take. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to test this one. But, all things considered, I think it would work. I'd be interested to see that Hulk team when you build it (if you don't mind sharing).

      Your articles are awesome!
A suggestion for a rule would be only commons and uncommons, and no AVX. (Randomize starter team without rares, super rares, OP's and AVX)
I know you did a common only swap article but this one is a little different and I think very challenging!

      Keep up the great work.

I'll be happy to share the Hulk team when I get it finalized, there are a couple of things I have to work out, but I think you've given me some ideas as to how to shore it up with supporting cards....

I'm going to break the fourth wall here a little bit. While Chris really IS my boss, he didn't fire me. In fact, I've slowly (but surely) gotten him addicted to Dice Masters in the past few months. In fact, he, Amanda Shenanigans, and I all work in the same office.

IS there sometimes more talk about Dice Masters than work-related stuff? Indeed.

So in your article you said, "My final swap will be Power Bolt for Cone of Cold."
However, in the team link you are using Power Bolt and Cone of cold.

Did you keep Chainmail armor and drop powerbolt for cone of cold?

Good catch. Originally, the BACs were going to be PB and Cone of Cold... but, at the last minute, I de-swapped and then re-swapped. Just didn't get everything.

I've updated the team link to reflect the correct team on retrobox. Thank you!
