Don't Expect the Fantastic Four Anytime Soon

Rate this Entry

It's pretty widely considered that the Fantasticar and Sue Storm were late pulls from the Uncanny X-Men starter set. It's looking more and more like they and others won't be in anything for the foreseeable future. A bit of background.

Late in 2014, Marvel discontinued the "Fantastic Four" and "Ultimate Fantastic Four" comic series.

Last May, Bleeding Cool News noted that artists had been specifically instructed not to use anything connected in any way to the Fantastic Four.

Most notably, no Fox-owned characters appeared on the cover of Marvel 75, despite the popularity of the X-Men and the fact that the Fantastic Four were Marvel's FIRST.

I could go on. The most recent news? During GAMA Trade Show, Upper Deck Entertainment - the company behind the phenomenally successful "Marvel Legendary" deck building game - announced that they would be discontinuing the Fantastic Four expansion. Meanwhile, Marvel has killed Wolverine and Deadpool in the comics and limited toy and shirt licensing on Fox-owned properties.

And as far as we know, at this point, only Wolverine will be in the Age of Ultron set.

The bottom line is that until Fox and Marvel can settle their differences as far as creative control over the X-Men and Fantastic Four go, expect these heroes to be in short supply everywhere.

I'm still hoping that one mystery blue with white die in AOU is Sue Storm. I don't know of any character that comes close to what that symbol represents. It would be pretty lame if DM only had 3 of the F4.

I'm hoping that this doesn't have any ramifications on future X-Men Dice Masters Sets as well. I'd really like to see Age of Apocalypse or The Dark Phoenix Saga as a Set. Also, why can't we just have Sue Storm already?

Marvel is just not going to let it happen, it's the same reason that UD is forced to cut the FF expansion for Legendary. It's all but certain that Sue Storm and the Fantasticar were late cuts from UXM. Consider that Marvel has zero problem with doing this despite the fact that the Fantastic Four were really the beginning for them.

In some ways I can understand where they are coming from, since they want to have the creative control back for these properties. Lets face it, the Fantastic 4 Movie Franchise wasn't all that stellar (we'll see how the next one is, but I'm not getting my hopes up). But, the fact is that the real people that get hurt and disenfranchised by actions like this are the fans, not the corporation you're trying to undermine.
