Tiny Leaders (M:TG) & Dice Masters

Rate this Entry
Hello everyone,

It is coming up on only a month that I have been playing Dice Masters. I love the game and have all five sets almost complete now. At my local card store there is also M:TG of course. I played Magic way back in 1994 when it was a new game and got really interested, similar to how I have gotten interested in Dice Masters. I have decided to get into the Tiny Leaders format as it does not require me to have multiple copies of the same card and it seems to be something that everyone kinda has available to play.

So whats this got to do with Dice Masters?

I have been the tournament organizer the last two weeks at our local shop for Dice Masters. So far it has been going really well and I am pleased with the turn-out and "fun" being had by the players. After playing Tiny Leaders format in Magic for the first time this past Saturday I started thinking why not have a similar format for Dice Masters?

The answer to that question is there is no reason not to have a slightly different format!

So I have a challenge to the community on a whole. Try out having some matches where you may only use 1-2-3 purchase cost characters, basic action cards and actions. Give it a try and get back to me with results;

1. Did it work?
2. Did people like it?
3. Should there actually be a leader declared? If yes what does that mean/look like for the game.
4. Should there be a banned list for this format?

I will give it a try in my shop and see what people think and report back on this Blog.

Until then, keep it rolling!

This is a great format idea - very fun. Thanks for sharing.

I really do like this setup, but I would be hesitant to play without the caveat: no super rares. I really wouldn't want to get involved in a format dominated by Tsarina and Gobby. I have enough disdain for them with a full retinue of counterplays available. Also, I think that Flying Sidekicks would be REALLY powerful. There are only 5 characters in the game (currently) that can counter flying sidekicks for 3-cost or less.

Necromanticer I believe your thoughts on getting a banned list is right on the mark.

At my local card shop we have banned Super Rares from the events we have been having to level the playing field a little. I believe rolling that to this format would be correct.

Do you feel any additional 3 cost or less cards would fit on a banned list?

Outside of super rares, I think the only thing that really stands out as needing to be limited is Beast and possible Falcon - Recon. Beast poses a problem because there are literally 2 instances of overcrush out of all the legal cards (Blade Knight - Solo Act and Horn of the Unicorn) and no real form of AoE without specifically building villains/Scarlet Witch. Simply put, there's not a reasonable way to deal with him since you're going to have such weenie characters. Falcon is problematic because there's still a lot of sidekick buffs, so if you can make them unblockable, it's going to blow away a setup of only 3-costs and under.

Other than that, I think the format is well balanced. I don't see anything else that's too powerful once those characters and the super rares are removed.

I wonder if the Format wouldn't be better served with a 4 cost limit? You still eliminate a lot of the global only cards out there, but you include a few options for AoE clear, and solid bruisers with significant draw backs. The other reason I recommend 4 cost, is you still have "big buys" to work up to, with being able to roll 4 dice on a turn you're looking to buy 4 costs on a turn you ramp to. This limit also includes almost all of the basic action cards eliminating 2 or 3 at most.
This limit however does exclude 2C4W, PXG, BEWD, 1000D and many of the other global only cards that we see prevalent in the current metas. Cards too expensive to ever buy, but great for their global functionality.

Actually in Dice Masters I find that it is more fun to play the opposite where you had to play with 4+ cost. There is a lot of speed and power at the lower levels, but some stores have done 4+ banning PXG which is a neat way to play.

4-costs sounds good because it allows you some reasonable stats, but that's also where the real silliness begins. Cards like Johnny Storm, Formerly Weapon X, Patch, Imprisoned (only OP because of the low cost format), Human Paladin, Lord of D., Red Tornado, and Vibe (he's not OP, I just love his effects too much). That's a lot of nonsense to put up with and I really don't think it would be good for the format.

Necromanticer thank you very much for the guidance, I think you are spot on with both calls.

I hope to have a draft out tomorrow, so if you think of anything else let me know!!

I like the idea of this for sure. Would certainly require a good first/second buy!

I think when you go to 4 purchase the game would shift to way too many guys were that is the win condition. The idea with the format is to make it so variable each game because the luck of the roll will play such a huge part of winning or losing.

I agree, there are lots of 4 purchase cards who are very important to the way people play their games. Take them away and you have a whole new ball game. My son beat me tonight literally with sidekicks, not even ones with +1a/+1d, just straight up attacked while I was trying to set things up with patch!!

3 cost is were I am going for sure!

I went ahead and setup a 3-cost or lower team on vassal if you ever want to try the format out. Send me a message and we'll play.
