Stop Hitting Yourself! -A fun way to mess with your player-base on a whim

I may have mentioned in a post on the forums this week that I was planning to do something interesting and potentially crazy this week since I predicted that I would have a low head count for a tournament. It all started a while back when @theroyalfalcon and I were brewing some ideas for special events I could run. Then the idea hit me. I quickly fleshed it out and decided how I was going to do it. The Ant Man OP kit had hit my store, so we ran our OP event yesterday night. Each kit comes with 20 alternate arts for Ant Man: Biophysicist, 5 alternate arts (with errata) for Wasp: Bio-electric Blasts and 5 of the brand new Ultron: Nanite Virus. Since some might see the event idea as unfair if the tournament was run traditionally, I decided to give every participant an Ant Man, Wasp and Ultron OP card. Seeing as I just saw a set of them sell for $20 USD, I'd say that's pretty good value for your $5 entry fee. The remaining money left in the pot would be used to pay out packs to the top 2 players of the evening, as a little incentive to try and do well with the event. A week in advance, I told the players two things:
1. Build something interesting and fun this week because
2. Everyone will receive top tier prizing because of a special surprise I have in store
So, once everyone got settled in their seats with their teams out, I paired up the matches and sprung my surprise.
Everyone switch teams with your opponent and play whatever they brought against them.
The looks on their faces were priceless. I had basically just sealed the fate of anyone who brought something much more powerful than what their opponent had. This was especially funny when I saw one person hand over a villain retaliation team, and another a nick fury avengers team.
Now you may be wondering, how did it work out? Did you play in the event? If so, what did you bring since you were the only person who knew about the swap? Isn't that a conflict of interest?
(To quickly answer the final question, yes, and I checked to make sure everyone was ok with me participating before the event. It was part of the reason I gave everyone tons of prizes of course.)
Everyone had a ton of fun, even the one person who was a bit disappointed because they really wanted to play their villain team. And I'll happily show you what I brought:
This is an idea I haven't exactly been working on, but I've thought would be funny to play one day. It's been sitting in the back of my head for a while and I needed to do something with it. Now, most people at my locals don't own many super rares, if at all. I thought it would be fun to let them turbo out all 3 super rare Egyptian gods for this event. It worked too, everyone was able to get to at least 2 of them expediently, and I know it may seem silly, but having to pay life to field characters from unfamiliar teams and not being able to field any sidekicks at all to chump block in the face of these beasts is not exactly an easy situation. I one game, I ate 8 damage from a 13 attack overcrushing Slifer the Sky Dragon.
Throughout the night, I ended up playing 3 different teams. The avengers team, a very budget teen titans team that abused the heck out of parallax, and a doctor strange action burn team that was trying to use Rally! and Enslavement BACS to do it's damage. I did somehow manage to win all 3 games, but they were all very, very close. In the last example I gave, I ended up straying from the intended win condition of that team entirely, and beat my opponent down with parallax and morphing jars.
I ended the evening in first place overall, getting a few packs, and I prized everyone else out with their 3 brand new promo cards. Everyone had a great time and told me they'd love to do it again sometime, and maybe one day, I will surprise them again. Muahahahahahaha!
Any questions or comments? Feel free to post them below and let me know what you think. I'll be happy to discuss them with you.
