Behold! The Beholder!

Rate this Entry
When I first looked at Beholder: Lesser Aberration, It sounded kind of cool, but I dismissed it, thinking most worth while globals are reactionary or have to be used on your opponents turn or that having to buy, churn, and field a character probably isn't worth the effort. But in the interest of exploration and curiosity I took some time to look at globals and things that could be fun to do with Beholder.
Here are some fun things to do with two free globals:
-Free Wasp activation! Get a ping for hulk or just hit your opponent and save that valuable energy.

-Spider-Man: Tangled Web. Get this guy in the field and get some free pumps! Send that already meaty beholder into battle with +2A!

-Ultron and Ultron Drone - Control how the blocks pan out and keep that valuable fist energy. If you fielded Beholder on lvl 1 or 2, you are really getting a value here.

- Red Dragon/Thousand Dragon - alone or paired up, you can really get some actions die for cheap, but having to get a beholder and field him first probably means that those die aren't needed a whole lot anyway.

-Mr. Sinister - Throw around some random fire! Recycle your beholder or in tandem with White Tiger, you can field a sidekick, hit it for 3, so you've possible removed an opponents character and ramped 1 sidekick die.

Here are some of the cooler pairs.
-Resurrection/Villainous Pact/Silver Surfer - Prep 2 die for the fielding cost of 0 or 1! If you are working on using the Vicious Struggle die, then Silver Surfer for free could be nice while applying pressure by attacking with Beholder.

-Ring: Epic Gear and White Tiger - Free Ring activation is great! Getting a free energy of your choice out of the used pile is a unique way to ramp and if you choose to make it a sidekick it helps keep the sidekicks out of the bag. Getting 2 sidekicks a turn with Ring and White Tiger seems to slow for a Gobby team, I'm keeping an open mind and thinking in terms of value and just getting free blockers and using this as an alternate for of ramp where I don't get more die, but better die.

-Iron Man and Blue-Eyes White Dragon (BEWD) - turn Beholder into a villain and KO him with BEWD's global. This is only really useful when playing a villains team with Black Manta - Deep Sea Deviant out. Cute and fun.

-BEWD and Resurrection - The rules seem unclear on if BEWD will actually require a KO or if his whole cost will be free. I submitted the question to Wizkids a couple days ago, so we'll assume the less powerful for now that the KO is required. This is a simple pairing that just pushes your ramp and churn far past your opponent. Even requiring a KO, you just KO the beholder you probably fielded for free and have him to do it again next turn. Now you have preped a die and have 2 off your next purchase. Over all you've got 3 energy up on the fielding of one Beholder on lvl 1 or 2.

-Parallax and anything - Parallax global is pretty great as you can Resurrection or something else then reroll your just fielded Beholder and try to turn him into energy and fix your other bad rolls.

These are some pretty cool things to do, but it is what Magic players call "durdley." Yeah, some sweet stuff can be done like fielding a lvl 1 Beholder to activate a free BEWD and Resurrection globals and buy another Beholder for 2 energy so you can start chaining them, but it's all for not if your opponent beats you down with Guy Gardner in the mean time. I hope there is a balance between the power and the durdle that can be found. I haven't even thought too much about using Beholder's own global or some other popular global abilities that show up a lot like Relentless, Polymorph, and Magic Missile. Please share the strange brews you come up with!

Thanks for the blog, but it is a bit confusing. You are writing about the Faerun Under Siege Beholder: Lesser Aberration which does exactly what your article describes. But the link in the article shows the Battle for Faerun Beholder which does not do what your article describes. Might want to edit it for clarification sake.

Cable is a pretty unspectacular character but this makes him a little better.

On a turn when you have the UC or R cable out you can force someone to block him and hold the beholder back as defense.

If it saves you two bolts you could then use the Rare's ability or magic missile or free up that energy for something else.
