“What if” Wishlist: Cards I Would Love to See

Rate this Entry
My favorite Dice Master cards, regardless of their usefulness in actual game play, are ones in which the character's or action's ability matches player's expectations of what should be accomplished. For instance, it shouldn't be baffling that the Flash cards offered various ways to make him unblockable, since he's THE FLASH, and it's difficult to block what you cannot see. In the new Faerun set, the common Elf Thief can sneak into the playing field for free and steal an opponent's resource because THAT'S WHAT THIEVES DO. Early Wolverine cards worked most effectively when he attacked alone. Even without an extensive comic book background I can appreciate the Ant-Man global because it perfectly demonstrates what his character is capable in battle.

I love such connections, and I think Dice Masters has done a good job of matching appropriate attributes/power to its extensive array of characters in all of their sets. Because Dice Masters has such a large collection of potential source material, I like to occasionally brainstorm on abilities I think match characters perfectly, so that if I hear a particular character is going to be featured in a future set, I try to guess that character's abilities based on what I know about the character and what I know about the game's mechanics. Just for fun, I thought I'd share two cards I'd like to see in the future that would totally make sense.

First, I would like to take a look at Mystique. I thought Dice Masters did a great job with her in the Avengers vs. X-Men set, but felt the Uncanny X-Men versions of her abilities (except for Alias: You) didn't speak to her most famous skill set: shape shifting. Mystique has the ability to change her looks at will. How could this best be represented in Dice Masters.

The answer came to me in the form of the Basic Action Die Infiltrate. With the exception of that card, what other options do players have to manipulate their affiliation? None that are practical. Wouldn't it make sense to introduce that mechanic in future Mystique cards? I think the simplest version would allow her to choose an affiliation when she is fielded, whereas more powerful versions could couple that ability (or something worded similar like "When Mystique enters play, she gains the affiliation of her choice") with some of the abilities introduced in her early versions that indicate her shape-shifting ability.

My second example is inspired by the newest Dice Masters set. Besides the large number of creatures they added to the mix, they also added two D&D staples for those who embrace the magical arts: rings and potions. I'd like to specifically talk about Potions in Dice Masters. As I ruminated while walking to work today, I suddenly realized I did not like any of the current Potions because they all have a sense of permanence. In other words, D&D players may only use a potion once because and empty potion bottle is as magical as an empty beer stein.

To me, Potions would be the perfect place to introduce a mechanic I hope will eventually enter the game: trashing. I think it would be great to have a super rare like "Potion - Elixir of Life: When played, Elixir of Life restores all life to one player. Remove Elixir of Life from play after it is first used by a player." Because it's such a powerful card, it might make sense to only allow one die for this card. You can offer lower-cost versions that provide limited healing (or other ability) and more dice options, but all potions should be removed from the game once they've been played since a beverage confined to a glass vessel becomes useless after it's used/drunk.

Talking about Mystique... I know lots of people were clamoring for a Riddler with ? energy, but I think Mystique would be so appropriate to have the wild energy. She can be anything and be useful in many different situations. Also, you'd have to have a wild to purchase her... which would be fun!

A global that I think would be interesting...
Pay to remove one affiliation from one character die.
