Wombo Combo!

Rate this Entry
Hey everybody,

It's been a long time. I'm still actively playing the game, but my daughter was diagnosed with some scary health issues, so things have been slow. That being said, I needed something to help decompress. I thought a small series focusing on card combos would be beneficial for both new and old players alike. To start, I will give a combo that will likely never see competitive play, but is interesting nonetheless. I introduce the following cards:

(White Tiger - Mystical Amulet)

Let's see what we have here. Two cards that never typically see the light of day, and one that is used marginally. How does this fit together, you ask? Let me show you.

To start, we have red hulk. Outside of the fact that he has hulk stats similar to his AvX brethren, he has the ability to have the opponent lose life whenever an opposing sidekick is knocked out. Notice the word lose in the text. Loss of life is not the same as damage. As such, characters or abilities that prevent damage do not affect this card. To my knowledge (please show me if I'm incorrect), the only way to truly counter loss of life is to gain life. This make is terribly difficult for your opponent to prevent the loss of life. That being said, how do we get our opponent to field sidekicks for this ability?

Up until the ASM set, we never had a way to reliably get an opponent to get sidekicks on the field. The White Tiger global really breathed some life into the Red Hulk card and made the ability a bit more useful. No longer do you rely on your opponent to field sidekicks, but you can force them to field sidekicks. We are only really using this card for the global it provides. It provides a wall for us, and a wall of death for your opponent.

You may have noticed that Rulk has a burst face. That face states if Rulk KOs a sidekick, the opponent loses two life. The question now becomes how do you force your opponent to attack with sidekicks? We have force attack globals, but that could be bad as they can be used against you to let your Rulk through. To that end, take a look at the rare Ring of Magnetism. Attach this to Rulk, and you have a force to be reckoned with. Now all sidekicks must attack every turn. let Rulk block them, (on his burst face preferably) and then watch the opponent's life fall.

Of course, this team is not immune. Direct removal is problematic, as well as action die hate. That being said, how satisfying would it be to reduce your opponent's life total to 0 using an uncommon nobody really looks at? Very satisfying, I would say.

Before I close, I have a challenge for all of you. What cards would you use to support this win condition? Perhaps Kobolds for ramp? Polymorph to ensure a burst face Rulk? Let me know if the comments. Get those creative juices flowing!

I hope to do this once a week or so, depending on my daughter's health. However, we will see. Until next time!

I like the thinking outside the box!

Don't forget about the Ally keyword as well. They couldn't be fielded with WTG, but RoM will force them to attack and Rulk can KO them for life loss.

While you're thinking of ways to Wombo, might I recommend the uncommon Giant Spider and Polymorph?

One quick swing with the spider and all your opponent's sidekicks are blocking you. Now simply Polymorph your Red Hulk in for your spider and you have a guaranteed burst face and 12 damage potential based on how many sidekicks your opponent left on the field for you. That's a really painful hit to try and weather!

I actually made a post about this combo a while back, and what I thought made this team even better is Feedback BAC(even more damage), Casualties BAC (awesome LIfe gain) the Common Quicksliver(knocks out all sidekicks when fielded) Human Paladin(prevents global removal and ping, but nothing against actions.) I also used Red Tornado to cycle my quicksilvers through the back quicker.

That Giant Spider/Polymorph combo looks sweet.

I would bring Red Dragon and Prismatic Spray. Prismatic Spray stops your opponent from PXGing which keeps a lot of sidekicks in their used pile for much longer than usually, allowing you to use the White Tiger global.

Bring Kobolds for ramp (they're also fists for White Tiger global) and Human Paladin to protect them.

The team could be something like:

    Polymorph/Casualties(?)

    1-Kobold
    2-Giant Spider
    3-White Tiger
    4-Human Paladin
    4-Ring of Magnetism
    4-Prismatic Spray
    7-Red Hulk
    7-Red Dragon

I don't call you a genius inside of my own head for nothing. That's just evil! And by evil, I mean I'm definitely making this work somehow.

Would the sidekicks now be blocking red hulk to get knocked out? I thought if you would do that kind of move they would stay alive cause red hulk will just go to the field zone, not attack zone.

Wizkids stated that poly will work where the character is. If it is in the attack zone, then that is where the poly'd in character will end up. So yes it works rather well.
