$25 and Under: A Civil Start

Target and Rules:
Target of this blog is for the casual/new player who has either been introduced to the game or just started playing and is thinking of taking the next step to tournament play while under a budget.

Before I dive into the team, let me go over again the rules I set up for myself.
1. Create the most competitive feasible deck for under $25
2. Try to expand your dice master collection
3. Build a deck with the assumption the player does not already own any of the cards
4. For the price of cards, I am using coolstuffinc.com. I am not affiliated with the website; it is the website I tend to use more often to buy singles.
5. No op or alt art cards, this is because some sites do not sell these cards. Which of course, leaves ebay and other similar sites to obtain these cards and, as a result, the price fluxes too much.
6. Full set of 20 dice for the team.

Idea for team:
As stated in the beginning, the inspiration and purpose of this blog is to show some workable decks at a reasonable price with an emphasis on the new/causal player. I was discussing this blog with some people when someone brought up an interesting point: "What if someone spend some of the $25 on a starter set?" That's when the idea for this deck hit me. So, instead of starting with $25 to make a deck from scratch, I am going to assume the player bought a Civil War starter set. At the time I was writing this blog, the Civil War Start Set was on sale at both my local store and coolstuffinc.com for 14.99. So I will use that price of the starter set. This will give me 10.01 exactly to work with.

A Civil Start:
One of the new keyword abilities that I love from Civil War is Intimidate. So this deck will revolve around the uncommon Punisher that gives all non-sidekicks that you field intimidate. In order to best squeeze this card for what its worth, the team is made up of mostly low fielding cost characters and Parallax, with the main intent to clear our opponent's side of the board then swing.

Team Breakdown:

::
Goblin (Budget so far: 10.01)
Lesser Humanoid - .79
Goblin swarm is the main source of fuel for our team’s engine and partial ramp. As stated in my previous blog, in terms of fist swarm, kobolds are cheaper in terms of purchase but not in terms of obtaining the cards. For maximized effect, we will buy 3 copies of Greater Humanoid for .49 each.

::cw3::
Black Widow (Budget so far: 7.75)
Widowmaker - starter set
Widowmaker has a total fielding cost of 2, which may hamper our Parallax engine. However, this version of Black Widow will be a great combo with Punisher. If Punisher is on the field, Widowmaker can KO an opposing sidekick AND remove another opposing die off the field. Black Widow basically becomes a source of double removal. A great set-up piece for board clear. Since the card is such a great combo with Punisher, we will buy two copies of Mistress of Pain for .39 just so that we can max out our Black Widow die.

::cw92::
Punisher (Budget so far:6.97)
War Journal - .99
This is part one of our win condition. War Journal, for a turn, gives all of our non-sidekick characters intimidate. This combine with Parallax opens the door for removal. Remember, we don't have to have roll a bunch of non-sidekicks when we field Punisher. Parallax allows us to 'bank' potential energy by fielding characters now, and when we are ready, reroll fielded character for energy and/or to activate Punisher's ability. This eases the stress of trying to roll a perfect hand. Once Punisher hits the field, we can start our Parallax engine. Since Punisher is so important for our team, we will buy the common version of .39.

::cw11:: ::cw60::
Rocket Raccoon (Budget so far: 5.59)
Big Flarkin'Gun - starter set OR Not a Raccoon - .39
Rocket is cheap 2 drop with a total fielding cost of 1 that packs a punch. I prefer Not a Raccoon, since both versions are 2 drops might as well go with the one that ping for some extra damage. However, I know there might be some who might be hesitant with self ping damage. Regardless, we want an extra Rocket die, so we will pick up a Not a Raccoon.

::
Prismatic Spray (Budget so far: 5.20)
Lesser Spray - 1.75
What if you are all set to unleash your Punisher Parallax combo, but across the field you see Wonder Ring (Wonder Girl with Ring of Magnetism) or Lord of D with dragons? Here is your solution Prismatic Spray. The card has been a tournament staple for some time. I saw a few floating around WKO2. A more important reason, why I included Prismatic Spray is to break away from Kryptonite and be introduced to other cards that have a similar blanking effect. Normally prismatic spray costs about 1.99 a piece, but we can get a played prismatic spray for 1.75. I don't care about the condition of card at this price. We are getting the card for the dice and ability. So we will pick up two played Prismatic Spray at 1.75 each.

::
Professor X (Budget so far: 1.70)
Recruiting Young Mutants - .99
Classic Ramp. 'Nuff Said.

::cw20::
Wasp (Budget so far: .71)
Janet Van Dyne - starter
Wasp is here as a cheap 2 cost character, even though she has a total fielding cost of 4. She also provides some mask energy for our PXG and one of our basic actions. We will pick up a copy of America's Newest Superhero for .39.

::
Parallax (Budget so far: .32)
Source of Terror - .25
Possibly best card for its cost. You get so much for a quarter. The ability to roll as many of your dice can a be life savor for bad rolls, and depending on your team, the main win condition. Parallax is here to squeeze Punisher - War Journal for everything its worth. Field Punisher, then Parallax you other characters to re-field and board wipe. Remember, only your non-sidekick characters will have the Intimidate keyword; save your sidekicks for Parallax fuel.

::cw29::
Long Live the Resistance
Cost - Starter
This card is purely for defense. This will help increase your survival against the popular ring teams. And, if you have to, you could purchase the die to try to gain some health, but chances are you will be using this purely for the global.

::cw31::
Superhero Registration Act
Cost - Starter
I see this basic action for this team as a win-win. The goal is to clear your opponent's board of dice. With this action card, your opponent will have to decide: give use more dice to draw and roll (to hopefully fuel our Parallax engine) or KO one of his/her dice (which makes us one step closer to our goal).

Final Team:
Long Live the Resistance
Superhero Registration Act
Goblin - Lesser Humanoid x4
Black Widow - Widowmaker x4
Punisher - War Journal x2
Rocket Raccoon - Big Flarkin' Gun OR Not a Raccoon x3
Prismatic Spray - Lesser Spray x2
Professor X - Recruiting Young Mutants x1
Wasp - Janet Van Dyne x3
Parallax - Source of Terror x1

Left over budget: .07

Alternate Build:
::cw32:: ::cw33:: ::cw7::
::cw15:: ::cw57:: ::
With .07 left in our budget, this team gets by the skin of its teeth. Obviously, .07 does not give us much experiment room. One card that I would like to point that may be helpful for the team is the Civil War Basic Action - The Front Line. With our main condition being clearing your opponent's field, this card could give us the lethal we need to win. You could replace Long Live the Resistance to give our team a more agro feel or replace Superhero Registration Act as a better support to our win-con (plus The Front Line has no ability that could be decided by your opponent).

This team was made with the assumption, we can get a copy of the starter set for 14.99. But what if you got the starter set for 19.99? This will give us a budget of $5.01. That means we would have to make some substitutions to our team. We are still going to stick with our strategy with our previous team of using Punisher and Parallax. Here's an alternate team build using the Civil War Starter Set and $5.01:

Superhero Registration (cost: starter)
The Front Line (cost: starter)
Falcon - Wingman x4 (cost: .50)
Black Widow - Widowmaker x3 (cost .39)
Punisher - War Journal x2 (cost 1.38)
Rocket Raccoon - Big Flarkin' Gun OR Not a Raccoon x3 (cost .39)
Scarlett Spider - Redemption x2 (cost: starter)
Professor X - Recruiting Young Mutants x1 (cost: .99)
Rust Monster - Greater Monstrosity x4 (cost: 1.00)
Parallax - Source of Terror x1 (cost .25)
Total Cost: 4.90

Remember that $5.01 does not give us much to work with, so with that being said...no, you are not mistaken. That's right, Rust Monster is on our team. Rust Monster is on our team for multiple reasons. Mask energy will help with PXG, Rust Monster only costs two to purchase with a total fielding cost of 0, and he costs just a quarter. Remember, our main win condition is to spam field our characters when Punisher gets on the field to clear away at our opponent's field. For this to happen effectively, we need cheap characters with low fielding costs; Rust Monster checks off our list of what we are looking for this team. On a personal note, how great will it look when your Rust Monster intimidates a big character off the field? I know that another possible card could be Pym Particles which has synergy with Ant-Man: Scott Lang, but with the lack of fist characters for Pym Particles to work with, I decided to go with Rust Monster instead.

To save money, we will be using two characters from the Civil War Starter Set: Falcon - Wingman and Scarlet Spider - Redemption. Even though Falcon-Talks to Birds has a total fielding cost of 4, he his a 2 fist purchase cost with good stats. I would prefer to use Falcon purely for energy, but if we need to, we can field him and bank the energy for later with Parallax. We will pick up two copies of Falcon-Aviary for .50 to max out his dice count. Scarlet Spider is here as a source of ping damage and if we desperate, mask energy for PXG. To make up for the lack of swarm ramp we will stick with Superhero Registration Act and try out the alternate basic action card The Front Line.

I hope this article was helpful. Please leave any helpful replies/comments/suggestions. The more I get, the better (I hope) this blog will become.
