Woes of a dying community.

Rate this Entry
I am from the Melbourne, FL community and I have to accept my community is nearly dead. Some of you may read this and wonder why? Well, there are many reasons, but it's fairly obvious at this point, when I am lucky to get another player or 2 to show up. So I would like to highlight what killed my community so that others may learn from this. Keep in mind, my community was 16+ strong for a good while. So much so that we could have won the Regionals by default if we had tried.

1.) Responsibilities. I understand family, jobs, and other hobbies require time. This was the case for a few of my players, one has dedicated his time to college and I wish him the best of luck. 3 other players balance this game and others so there are times where they just aren't available. This is a tough one to get around, because you can't really. Somethings come first period. I would say always try to shoot for days that work for everyone.

2.) Collectors. I know specifically 4 players that have quit because the sets were being pumped out too fast. These are the whales of our games. These players buy the most and give the most profits to wizkids, but when they get burnt out, the strictly players suffer as well. 3 of these players will no longer even buy the game mainly for the next point. Once again, this is a tough one because you can't stop a collector from collecting and/or burning themselves out. Try to encourage your local collectors to pace themselves.

3.) Game support. Let's face it. The biggest hurdle this game has is support from wizkids. We get a few questions answered every couple of months and almost always never the answers we really need. I have said time and time again, that these sets were not getting properly play tested both in limited format and unlimited. Combine that with the fact that we almost never get rules questions answered, and you will have both collectors and players quit out of frustrations. I would try to have 2 good players who are fair to keep track of rule updates and to be dedicated judges (not saying that they can't play).

4.) Game Balance. Many of us have gotten sick of certain cards essentially becoming the only cards played for competitions. This stems from the lack of play testing. Also, I don't mean Meta trends, I mean when the top 8 players are all playing the exact same team. This game has too much to work with to stagnate like that. I am at the point that I prefer to play drafts or themed nights to see variety. If your group shares this mindset, then dedicate most times to different rules (limited, team affiliation only, girls night, etc.).

5.) The few IPs. We have access to Marvel (6), DC (4), D&D (2), Yugioh (1), and TMNT (1). We still have an Iron man and Deadpool team coming out and a confirmed Batman set. we wanted more variety. I am at the point of making custom cards to play with...but it won't do any good if I can't get players. Unfortunately, this one is out of hands and the only thing we can really do is focus on different formats and give all the IPs a chance to shine.

These seem to be the top 5 in our area that has gradually shrunk our player base. It's an exponential problem. As the player base keeps shrinking, the same players keep facing each other, and quickly lose interest. I may be planning monthly trips to the west coast at this rate and take on Shadowmeld and his community.

You know the worst part of all of this? We have room at our shop to comfortably accommodate 100+ players.

I will stay involved in the community, but I may lurk in the shadows for some time.

    Well - now I'm bummed.

We have been trying to develop a scene here in Central Jersey. I have tried to get at least three stores to allow me to come in and do a Dice Masters day / night. I offered to provide all the materials, including foils for drafts, starter teams, game mats, etc.

Thankfully one store has allowed us unlimited access to come in and play, and they even helped promote the nights via their Facebook page. So far we have had one person show up and ask about the game - until his friend showed up and then they played Magic.

I've committed to every Saturday night for the next two months to see if we can develop something.

Thanks for your post - your five items items are my 'early warning system' now :-)

No problem, granted some of the stuff is what is wrong with the game.

I will say this, be dedicated and communicate with your players, develop a group on a social media they all use so you guys can stay in touch. It worked for our league though that fell apart, but it was a strong resurgence. Post information on here and the reddit and spread the word. Definitely keep them nights and drafts in mind.
