Evolution of an Evolving Format

Rate this Entry
With the addition of Green Arrow and the Flash, and the Dr. Strange team pack, the total number of cards in the game is at 1793. Now add another 124 for the Deadpool set in October, another 34 for the Ironman and War Machine Starter, and another 58 for the second TMNT box set. That puts the available usable card total at over 2000. This can feel overwhelming to a new player, and major headache to the experienced player looking for something new to play. With the endless possibilities of lists that could be played the meta has become stagnant on about 3 lists. With the addition of new cards these same 3 lists have not seemed to budge, only mold to the 1 or 2 threats that may be added per set.

An evolving format may be the answer to a lot of the issues i see with the game. If you are not sure what I am talking about, I am referring to a set rotation for tournament play. Heroclix has a modern and golden age, Magic has standard and legacy. I no longer believe that it is a question of IF this evolving format will happen, but WHEN. A few things may need to happen before this is possible. The main thing here is that this needs to come from Wizkids. Your FLGS can change the format on you weekly to keep things interesting, but I am talking about National and World level tournament play. So this should be regulated by the company producing the game. We will also need to establish how and when sets rotate out. So a 4 month gap then 2 grav feed sets in 2 months does not fit the mold. Lets get a set every 3 months, some starter and team packs in between, and give us a consistent rotation and release schedule.

Wizkids is actually doing test to try to solve the first turn advantage issue. So I know that they are listening. But what if i told you that the evolving meta could solve this? I have done no research to back this up, but my thought process is quite simple. The competitive level of dice masters is either a form of a turn 3 kill, or a way to shut down your opponent by turn 3. Remove the ramp and neither of these are possible until turn 5 or 6. Yes, i am talking about PXG. Coming from the second set released, this will be one of the first cards to go. Now the tempo of the game has slowed, you actually have to pay attention to your opponent rather than playing your standard 3 turn routine. Playing the game is now a thing rather than hoping for a coin flip. You can play pro active or reactive. Now remove FUS, no more Bard, no more Elf, no more Dwarf. Vicious Struggle is now gone. So what is the new kill condition? How are you ramping your list to be faster than mine? Does your list work once you lose this set of cards? Not happy with the meta, come back in 3 months...

This game is still young. If there are issues there are solutions. It appears that Wizkids does listen to the community, so lets have a conversation.

I think from a designer perspective rotation is inevitable. As a player - I hate it and hope it will cme as late as possible, because rotation always means more expenses. Rotation doesn't fix cards, it jsut removes them and you have to design new ones so, that they aren't broken anymore.

Based on the release of FUS it would be quite a while before bard is rotated out. No pxg would definetly change a lot of teams, and i welcome that. But i think bard needs a more reasonable counter, and soon. A global to cancel a when attacks ability would limit bards potential in the game. Cold gun is definetly a step in the right direction . Being able to blank when it's the other players turn is huge. Maybe deadpool will shake up the meta some more.

We have had blanking on the others player turn in loki lafeyeson.

Thanks for the write up. Unfortunately a rotation would take out some of my answers to bard (and Dwizard and paladin) in the 4 cost halfling thief and Constantine, depending on where the cutoff is.
