Lightbulb South African Dice Masters Nationals - 18 July 2015

Hey all, I know this might be a bit late, but life caught up with
me after the tournament and I never got to post any of the results.

It feels like I've been playing dice masters since about 1 month
before AvX released. I love this game, and I loved being able to
take part in a Nationals event.

We were 12 people overall, with 3 rounds of swiss before a cut to Top 8.

I played a lot of talented people and was really lucky to come out on top.
Below are the Top 8 Lists for our event:

    Ernst Fourie - 1st Place

    3 Beast - Genetic Expert
    4 Black Widow - Tsarina
3 Psylocke - Kwannon the Assassin
    3 Constantine - Helblazer
    2 Green Goblin - 'Gobby"
2 Human Torch - Johnny Storm
    1 Professor X - Trainer
    2 Jinzo - Trap Destroyer

    Relentless
    Distraction

I wanted to play the event from the Nick Fury / Ant-Man angle, but decided
to go for something I know would win. Plus I thought more poeple would be
prepared against it. At the end of the day, I'm glad I played the team I did.

It had answers for all(MOST) of the annoying cards in the metagame, and I was
sure I'd be able to outplay most of the people I had to face.

If I could go into the event again, with the knowledge I had now, I think I
    would change 2 things:
I'd replace Psylocke with Deadpool - Jack. It just seems like a better answer,
and I'd swap out Beast - Genetic Expert for Mutate #666.

    Brandon Govender - 2nd Place

    3 Storm - African Priestess
    2 Wolverine - Formerly Weapon X
    1 Professor X - Trainer
    2 Venom - Angelo Fortunato
    2 Toad - Mortimer Toynbee
    3 Green Goblin - "Gobby"
    4 Black Widow - Tsarina
    3 Beast - Mutate #666

    Relentless
    Distraction

My opponent in the finals. TO be completely honest, this deck looked like such
a hot mess to me, until I sat down and played our first game. The deck was working
together better than it looked like it should have, and Brandon is such a good player.

He had me sweating a lot during the finals, but luckily I was able to beat him with
a fast Jinzo, into Tsarina, Constantine and Johnny Storm.

    Neeran Motheeram

    4 Black Widow - Tsarina
    2 Constantine - Hellblazer
    4 Green Goblin - "Gobby"
2 Human Torch - Johnny Storm
2 Nova - The Human Rocket
2 Iceman - Too Cool for Words
    2 Hulk - Green Goliath
    2 Jinzo - Trap Destroyer

    Magic Missile
    Polymorph

My opponent in the semi-finals, he played really well, and we had very tense games.
Nove really is an amazing character, with a good ability and crazy stats.

    Krishin Pillay - 4th Place

    3 Green Goblin - "Gobby"
    3 Falcon - Recon
    2 Constantine - Hellblazer
    4 Angel - Soaring
1 Red Dragon - Lesser Dragon
    1 Professor X - Trainer
    2 Deadpool - Jack
2 Green Lantern - Hal Jordan

    Blessing
    Polymorph

Am I glad I didn't have to play against this deck in the top 8. I got my
loss in the swiss against Krishin. Not only was his deck so against the meta,
but he is a talented playmaker and strategist. I think he Top 4'd the Heroclix
National Championships the day after as well.

    Chantelle Fourie - 5th Place

    2 Manticore - Greater Beast
    4 Black Widow - Tsarina
1 Red Dragon - Lesser Dragon
    1 Professor X - Recruiting Young Mutants
    2 Hulk - Green Goliath
    2 Loki - Gem Keeper
    2 Cyclops - Field Leader
4 Human Torch - Johnny Storm

    Magic Missile
    Swords of Revealing Light

My lovely wife and an absolute shark when it comes to dice masters,
she went undefeated in the swiss. She started looking at decks the
week before Nationals, because she decided she wants to come along
for the experience. She went through all the Nationals and Worlds
footage on youtube and came back to me with a deck she wanted to play.

She played on point, only loosing out in the quarter finals to my
eventual top 2 oponent, Brandon. I am really glad I didn't have to play
her, as I'm not too sure I would've come out on top.

    Matthew Felix - 6th Place

    4 Angel - Soaring
    2 Captain America - Star-Spangled Avenger
    2 Punisher - McRook
    2 Hulk - Green Goliath
    1 Professor X - Recruiting Young Mutants
    3 Beast - Genetic Expert
    3 Storm - African Prietess
    3 Kitty Pride - Ariel

    Inner Rage
    Imprisoned

My quarter final opponent. Matt was a relaxed and funny guy, who played a
hell of a game. He had answers to my buys, and changed up his strategy when
I changed mine. Real good player with a lot of potential.

Kael du Plooy - 7th Place

3 Psylocke - Kwannon the Assassin
3 Green Goblin - Goblin Lord
    3 Falcon - Recon
    3 Angel - Inspiring
    2 Hulk - Jade Giant
2 Human Paladin - Master Lords Alliance
2 Captain Cold - Leonard Winters
    2 Professor X - Trainer

    Rally
    Power Bolt

Rudi came up from the coast for this event with his two sons, Kael and Liam.
They both played well, and it was good to see young faces involved in the game.

Pieter du Toit - 8th Place

    1 Professor X - Recruiting Young Mutants
    1 Silver Surfer - Sentinal
    3 Punisher - McRook
    2 Wolverine - Formerly Weapon X
4 Human Torch - Johnny Storm
    2 Hulk - Green Goliath
    4 Black Widow - Tsarina
3 Morphing Jar - Canopic Jar

    Imprissoned
    Distraction

The last person to round out the top 8 and also my opponent from the first round of swiss.

I hope this helps give some insight into our south african metagame.

Awesome report - thanks for the write up

One question - what would you have swapped Beast for?

And keep at it I hope you find your way to worlds and do well there as well (and if you want a game on vassal some time - look me up)
